Church history

The parish of St. Mary's Assumption consists of the places Geilenkirchen, Bauchem, Eichenthal, Horrig, Niederheid and Müncherath. The majority of the population consists of Catholics .

The church from which the city of Geilenkirchen got its name was probably the Lord of the Castle's own church . In 1201 Goswin von Valkenburg was the patron saint . 1487 allowed Johann IX. von Hoorn ( Haus Horn ), Bishop of Liège (1482–1506) to demolish the old church and replace it with a new building . Over the centuries the church has been changed several times. In 1822 the foundation stone of a new church was laid, which was consecrated in 1851. The war damage from 1944 had been repaired by 1953. The current church was renovated in 1979–1981.

1970 decided the church council , in Bauchem a community center as a daughter church of St. Joseph to build. This consisted of a church , parish hall , group rooms and associated ancillary rooms. The community center also serves as the garrison church of the Selfkant barracks .

In the course of the parish reforms in the Diocese of Aachen , the formerly independent, Catholic parish of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt Geilenkirchen was incorporated into the Community of Parishes (GdG) St. Bonifatius Geilenkirchen.
