St. Mary's Assumption (Geilenkirchen)
The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is located in the city of Geilenkirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia . It stands as a monument under monument protection .
location
The Assumption Church is located in the city center of Geilenkirchen between the city administration and the former castle , today's Episcopal Gymnasium St. Ursula. The honor cemetery is located southeast of the church .
history
The first church is mentioned when an altar was consecrated in 1247. Its poor condition led to it being demolished in 1487. A new church was built, which has seen some structural changes over the years. This church was also demolished and rebuilt. On August 26, 1822, vicar Martin Wilhelm Fonck laid the foundation stone . The plans came from Johann Peter Cremer , the construction was directed by Johann Baptist Cremer . The first service was celebrated in 1825 . The church was consecrated on June 15, 1851 . The war damage of World War II had been repaired by 1953. Repairs , fundamental renovations and painting were carried out in 1979/80 according to plans by Jean Keller from Mariaweiler .
architecture
The church is a brick church in classical form. The nave crosses a shorter transept in the middle. The fronts of the cross arms have flat gable ends. In front of the eastern arm is a three-storey tower with a dome . Inside there are barrel vaults , over the crossing is a flat pendentive dome . To the left of the entrance hall in the west is the baptistery , to the right is the Marienkapelle .
Furnishing
- The organ with 29 registers and mechanical action from 1984 was built by Heinz Wilbrand from Übach-Palenberg .
- In the church tower there are bells from 1594, 1682 and 1962.
- Wooden high altar , altar painting from the 17th century, several wooden holy figures, silver candlesticks from 1852, holy water font .
