location
The St. Johann Baptist Church is in the Hünshoven district. After the church was blown up in January 1945, today's church was built on the same site.
history
The first mention of a church in Hünshoven goes back to 1217. In the middle of the 15th century a single-nave church was built, to which a confessional chapel was added in 1916. This church burned down during the Second World War , and the church tower was blown up in January 1945. As a result of this measure, the Gothic nave was almost completely destroyed. Only a few remains of the wall of the choir and the southern nave remained. They were included in the new building, which was planned by Dominikus Böhm and Gottfried Böhm from Cologne . After a construction period of almost two years, the ceremonial consecration took place on October 20, 1951 . In 1986 the church was repaired and renovated under the direction of Walter Horn from Aachen .
architecture
The church is a steel-framed hall that expands to the chancel in the north and closes off a glass wall in a flat arch. The east wall is open in the south to the preserved choir yoke. The choir, closed on five sides, is part of the old church. On the west side of the church there is an inner courtyard, which is closed by a sacristy in the north, the parish hall in the west and the mighty five-story tower with an open bell in the south.
