history

In the second half of the 16th century, a small Reformed community was established in Hünshoven and Geilenkirchen. In 1720 a preaching house was acquired in Hünshoven, which contained a prayer room and an apartment for the clergyman. In 1804 a rectory was bought. In the middle of the 19th century the community received several bequests for the expansion and beautification of the prayer hall. An initial investigation by the Aachen private builder Faulenbach showed that such an expansion would not lead to a satisfactory result. The congregation then decided to demolish the preaching house and to build a new church on the same site. Faulenbach was again commissioned to work out the plans for this new building project . Although the royal government in Aachen preferred a neo-Gothic church with a vault system, the community stuck to Faulenbach's simpler design, not least for reasons of cost . After several years of dispute about the building permit, the construction of the church could finally begin in 1865 according to the design proposed by the community.

architecture

The brick church, inaugurated in 1866, was a simple nave complex with three round-arched windows on each of the two long sides. The west tower, which was in the longitudinal axis of the building, was drawn into the nave roof. A small porch originally took up the central portal of the church.

In 1956, the Geilenkirchen-Hünshoven Evangelical Church was given its current shape, which differs significantly from its original state. After the retracted choir apse was torn down , the nave was significantly lengthened. On the west side, the previous central portal was removed in favor of two side entrances. In the course of the renovation work, the interior was also given new equipment . A laterally attached building complex with sexton's apartment and community rooms finally added the church to an L-shaped building complex.

The last renovation of the church in Geilenkirchen took place in 1998: The dark brown benches were replaced by light chairs; the central aisle, which shaped the image of the church before the war, has been restored; a floor heating was laid under the new granite floor; the windows were insulated; the formerly white walls were painted light gray.

After an external renovation of the tower in 2015, the church received a church clock again. This is equipped with golden Roman numerals and golden hands. The new watch was inaugurated on April 26, 2015.

Furnishing
