Jere Juhani Karalahti (born March 25, 1975 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played for the Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League as well as the Hamburg Freezers in the German ice hockey between 1993 and 2016 League has played.
Career
Karalahti began his career at HIFK Helsinki in the Finnish SM-liiga and at the age of 18 became a regular in the squad of the famous Finnish club. During this time, the defender was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1993 in the sixth round as 146th by the Los Angeles Kings , but played until 1999 for the HIFK. This year, the right-handed shooter also played for the first time for the Finnish national team , with which he took part in the World Cup in the same year and ultimately won silver. However, the Finn's career has repeatedly been hampered by his lack of discipline, such as when Karalahti was sent to prison in 1996 after being arrested by police for possession of various illegal drugs . Nevertheless, the defender moved to the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL in the summer of 1999. After he was mainly in the Kings farm team in his first year , he had his breakthrough in 2000 when he was finally licensed for the Kings.
In the middle of the 2001/02 season Karalahti moved to league rivals Nashville Predators , in which, however, he only completed 15 games. In 2002 it became known that the defender was said to have consumed alcohol and other drugs in large quantities, which resulted in his expulsion from the national team and a suspension by the National Hockey League, which banned him for just under three months that same year. For the 2003/04 season , the Finn moved back to the SM-liiga for HIFK. Just three years later, however, Jere Karalahti was also suspended from his home club and then played for league rivals Kärpät Oulu . On December 6, 2007 the defender was arrested for selling drugs and sentenced on March 20, 2008 in Espoo to a suspended sentence of 20 months and a fine of 10,000 euros.
On July 24, 2008, the DEL team Hamburg Freezers Karalahti signed for the 2008/09 season , which in some cases drew severe criticism from the local press and some specialist magazines. Karalahti then claimed that he wanted to start a new beginning in Hamburg and make his old life forget through strong performances on the ice and a change of heart. Although he actually wanted to leave the Freezers for the 2009/10 season in the direction of the KHL and he had already signed a preliminary contract with Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk , he decided to stay in Hamburg.
In 2010 he moved to the Espoo Blues , with whom he reached the playoff final of the SM-liiga and the runner-up. In 71 games of the season Karalahti contributed 35 scorer points to this success. In September 2011 he was signed by HK Dinamo Minsk and acted as team captain in the 2012/13 season before returning to Finland to Jokerit in August 2013 . For Jokerit he reached 35 scorer points in the 2013/14 season, making him the best defender in the entire league. For the 2014/15 season Jokerit was accepted into the KHL and Karalahti was used in 22 games before he was released in November 2014 and moved to Sweden for the HV71 . He ended his active career there in the summer of 2016.
