Karl-Friedrich Krieger (born September 5, 1940 in Berlin ; † January 26, 2020 ) was a German historian .

Karl-Friedrich Krieger studied history and law at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel from 1962 to 1966 . He passed his first state examination in law in 1966. In 1966/67 he undertook a study and research stay as a scholarship holder of the French government. In 1968, Krieger received his doctorate in Kiel with a thesis on the origins and roots of the Rôles d'Oléron , supervised by Karl Jordan . Kriegers habilitation took place in 1976 at the University of Regensburg with a thesis on the feudal system in the late Middle Ages . Since 1982, Krieger has been teaching as the successor to Fritz Trautz as a full professor of medieval history at the University of Mannheim . He gave his inaugural lecture in June 1983 on the "Trial of Count Palatine Friedrich the Victorious at the Augsburg Reichstag in 1474". He was a member of the scientific advisory board of the German Historical Institute in London . Krieger retired in the summer of 2005. Franz Fuchs , Christine Reinle and Sabine von Heusinger were among his most important academic students .

In his dissertation on the origin of the Western European maritime law record, Krieger does not date it to the 12th century, but considers a point in time for "hardly a long time before 1286" to be probable. According to Krieger, the codification did not “create new law”, but only put long-practiced law into writing. With his habilitation, he made a fundamental contribution to research into the late medieval feudal system.

Krieger's research on the late medieval constitutional history provided a better understanding and a more positive judgment of the long reign of Frederick III. For the series Encyclopedia of German History he published the depiction of the king, kingdom and imperial reform in the late Middle Ages . For the handbook Schlaglichter der Deutschen Geschichte (Mannheim 1986) he wrote the chapter on the late Middle Ages. In 1994 he presented a relevant overview of the Habsburg dynasty in the Middle Ages, the second edition of which appeared in 2004. The reigns of Rudolf von Habsburg and Friedrich III take up a lot of space in the depiction . a. One hundred years after the publication of Oswald Redlich's comprehensive biography on Rudolf von Habsburg, in 2003 Krieger presented a new biography of the first Habsburg to sit on the Roman-German royal throne.

In 1990, Krieger published the first volume on the history of England from the beginnings to the 15th century on the history of England in three volumes . The fifth edition of this first volume was published in 2018. In July 2005, an international conference in honor of Kriegers took place in Mannheim. The Festschrift for the Mannheim medievalist with contributions by historians from five European countries on the imperial history of the 15th century was published in 2009.

In the last years of his life, Krieger suffered from Alzheimer's disease . He died in January 2020 after a serious illness at the age of 79. He was buried in the Mannheim-Neckarau cemetery.
