Karl Ludwig Stern von Gwiazdowski , until 1822 Karl Ludwig Stern (born March 1, 1794 in Soldau , † May 26, 1874 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general and military writer.

Life

origin

Karl was the son of the preacher in Soldau Friedrich Wilhelm Stern (1763-1837) and his wife Johanna Maria, née May (1773-1841).

Military career

After attending school in Marienwerder , Stern joined the East Prussian Artillery Brigade of the Prussian Army as a gunner on June 1, 1810 and was promoted to Portepeefähnrich at the beginning of April 1811 . In 1812 he took part in the battles near Eckau, Mesothen, Garossenkrug and Dahlenkirchen during the campaign against Russia , and on June 20, 1812 he was promoted to second lieutenant .

During the Wars of Liberation , Stern fought in the Battle of Großgörschen and was wounded near Bautzen . After his recovery he fought near Leipzig , Laon and Paris . In 1815 he was wounded in the battle of Waterloo . He also took part in the transition at Wartenburg and the battles at Danigkow , Königswartha, Löwenberg, Goldberg, Freyburg and Saint-Dizier . For Chalons he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class.

After the war, Stern was transferred to the Westphalian Artillery Brigade as Prime Lieutenant on June 5, 1816 and promoted to captain in mid-April 1818 . On October 2, 1822 he was by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. surnamed "of Gwiazdowski" the hereditary Prussian nobility raised . On April 20, 1837, he was promoted to major with the function of 5th staff officer. He was also a member of the Artillery Examination Board. On March 30, 1839, he was transferred to the 1st Artillery Brigade. He was then assigned to the United Artillery and Engineering School . On June 5, 1841, he was then department commander and, as such, was transferred to the Guards Artillery Brigade on February 27, 1844 . At the same time, he also acted as a member of the examination board for prime lieutenants. One year after his promotion to lieutenant colonel , Stern was assigned on March 28, 1848, initially to lead the 5th artillery brigade . On May 7, 1848 he was appointed brigadier and in mid-November 1849 he was promoted to colonel . Under awarding of the character as a Major General Stern participated in the May 18, 1854 his farewell to board before June 7, 1856 Pension zur disposition was made.

Stern worked as a military writer. In numerous lectures he described his experiences in the Yorck Corps in the years 1812/13. On October 8, 1863, he received the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Silver Medal for Art and Science for his achievements .

He died on May 26, 1874 at the age of 80 in Berlin and was buried on May 29, 1874 in the New Garrison Cemetery on the Hasenheide .

family

Stern married Emilie von Michaelis (1803-1824) in Posel on December 18, 1819 . The daughter Wilhelmine Marzella (1821-1894) emerged from the marriage, and in 1848 she married the judiciary Ernst von Gizycki († 1862).

After the early death of his wife on October 2, 1827 in Graudenz, he married Berta Wilhelmine von Michaelis (1811-1893), a sister of the Prussian Lieutenant General Hermann von Michaelis (1813-1888). The couple had several children:
