Karl Theodor Hoeniger (born October 21, 1881 in Vienna ; † August 28, 1970 in Merano ) was a South Tyrolean author and cultural historian .

Life

Hoeniger was born in Vienna as a Styrian with Tyrolean ancestors. There and in Klagenfurt he attended high school , then he did his one-year volunteer year with the artillery in Steyr . At the Universities of Erlangen and Vienna studied Hoeniger art history , German literature and philosophy and a doctorate in 1907, Dr. phil.

After completing his studies, Hoeniger became a dramaturge at the United Municipal Theaters in Graz and was later appointed to the Burgtheater . During the First World War he served on the Tyrolean front as leader of a field cannon battery on the Tonale , near Folgaria , in the seven municipalities and near Sesto .

After the war he married Käthe Pitscheider from Gries and stayed in South Tyrol . He became editor of the Bozner Nachrichten and published the Bozner Hauskalender (today: Südtiroler Hauskalender) from 1922 to 1967. He became the center of a circle that included Friedrich Teßmann , Karl von Hepperger and Josef Blaas. He also headed the cultural section of the Dolomites and the "Volksbote", was a theater and art critic and published numerous articles in the Schlern .

During the Second World War Hoeniger worked on the South Tyrolean cultural commission of the SS- Ahnenerbes in the working group "Germanic Weltanschauung and symbols". He also published in the National Socialist Bozner Tagblatt in 1943/45 .

With his poem The Eight Bozen Bliss , Hoeniger created a description of the old Bolzano patrician citizenship that has become popular .

Because of the bombing of Bolzano during the war, Hoeniger moved his residence to Obermais , where he stayed until his death.

The South Tyrolean Provincial Archives keep his scientific legacy .
