Karlheinz Kögel (born December 1, 1946 in Waldshut-Tiengen ) is a German media and tourism entrepreneur .

Life

After completing his carpenter apprenticeship in 1966 at the Jesuit college in St. Blasien , Karlheinz Kögel began attending the evening grammar school in Karlsruhe , while doing an internship at the Süddeutscher Rundfunk . Afterwards (from 1970) Kögel worked together with Walther Krause, Frank Laufenberg and Guido Schneider as editor and presenter for the then newly founded youth magazine Pop Shop in the third radio program of Südwestfunk (later SWF3 ).

Since 2009 he has been married to Dagmar Siegel, the second wife of the music producer Ralph Siegel , with whom he has been in a relationship since 2004. From his first marriage, Kögel has three children and his wife has a daughter.

Entrepreneur

In 1976 he founded Media Control , a company that determines sales figures and charts for various media in the entertainment areas of books, music, video, cinema, TV, games & social media. A joint venture with GfK began in 2003 and the two companies have been operating separately again since 2013. Media Control exclusively creates the book bestseller lists for Spiegel, Stern, Focus, Die Zeit, Spektrum der Wissenschaften, Börsenblatt (official magazine of the German book association) and Anzeiger (official magazine of the Austrian book association), these are based on the sales figures of the media control market research tool : MC METIS. For this purpose, electronic sales figures are read out daily from over 9,000 sales outlets. This corresponds to a market coverage of 88% for the German-speaking book market (Germany, Austria and Switzerland).

In 1995 he founded SC Spot Control , which automatically records and statistically evaluates television advertising. With the entry of the English company Thomson Intermedia , today's Ebiquity Plc , the company was renamed TMC Thomson Media Control in 2004 and has been collecting advertising market data for the media of television, radio, print, online, posters and cinema ever since. On April 13, 2010, Kögel acquired its shares as part of a takeover of the competitor Xtreme in the joint venture partner Ebiquity Plc. in which he now holds substantial shares.

In 1999 he founded chart-radio Webcasting GmbH & Co. KG , which no longer exists in this form today. He is the owner and managing director of Radio Basel . In 2012, Kögel converted Radio Basel into Radio Energy and continues to be Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Tourism

In 1979 Kögel started the tour operator Medico Flugreisen . This company specialized in the sale of remaining spaces on flights to Brazil .

The L'TUR Tourismus AG with Kögel as Chairman was established in since 1987. In 2008, Kögel gave up the chairmanship of the executive board and moved to the supervisory board. In 2009 he held 30 percent of L'TUR Tourismus AG after he had bought back 10 percent of the shares from Thomas Cook AG in June . Another shareholder was TUI AG (70 percent). In July 2007 he was appointed to the supervisory board of Thomas Cook AG. In December 2016, Kögel surrendered its 20% stake in L'TUR to the majority shareholder TUI and resigned as chairman of the supervisory board.

In 2008, Kögel announced the establishment of Binoli , which has since been renamed airberlin holidays . The joint project with Air Berlin combines flights with hotel offers for package tours.

In 2011, Kögel founded the online travel portal hlx.com. Karlheinz Kögel's media and more holding company held a 51% stake, L'TUR Tourismus AG 49%. In 2013, Kögel bought back 49% of L'TUR Tourismus AG. Kögel and his partner Ralf Usbeck became shareholders of HLX.

In January 2015, Kögel founded the organizer holidays.ch AG in Basel / Switzerland . There, online travel modules for hlx.com , Lufthansa Holidays, Swiss Holidays and Condor Holidays are combined.

German media award

Since 1992, Media Control has hosted the German Media Prize , which is awarded annually in Baden-Baden . The winners include former US President Bill Clinton , United Nations Secretaries General Ban Ki-moon and Kofi Annan , actor George Clooney and the Dalai Lama . For the 25th anniversary of the German Media Prize in May 2017, the former US President Barack Obama came to Baden-Baden and accepted the prize.

Benefit

In December 2009, Kögel founded the non-profit foundation United Charity together with his wife Dagmar Kögel . The benefit auction portal auctions off experiences and special objects that you usually cannot buy. In the meantime, over 7 million euros have been raised for children in need.

United Charity was honored in May 2015 for its innovative social commitment as part of the nationwide initiative Germany - Land of Ideas in the “Society” category.

Others

Kögel's companies have been located in the former “House of the Spa Guest” in Baden-Baden since 1997. In 1998 he opened the Medici restaurant there.

On May 26, 2013, Karlheinz Kögel organized a media meeting with top-class guests in a Baden-Baden Black Forest hut. In addition to the guest of honor, former US President Bill Clinton , ex-Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg , the entertainer Thomas Gottschalk , the moderator Peter Kloeppel and the Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche were also present.

Kögel is a CDU member. Kögel helped the then SPD chairman, his friend Oskar Lafontaine , to finance the larger than life sculpture of Willy Brandt in the newly built SPD party headquarters in Berlin.
