Khemmis is an American epic doom band from Denver , Colorado that was formed in 2012.

history

The band was founded in November 2012 by guitarists and singers Ben Hutcherson and Phil Pendergast, bassist Daniel Beiers and drummer Dan Barnett, taking the name of the ancient Egyptian city of the same name , today's Achmim . Beiers and Hutcherson had had Barnett's beer together in the bar, after talking about neurosis and the bands of the individual musicians at the time, the trio decided to make music together, although Hutcherson had brought his old college friend Pendergast into the line-up. That same year, Barnett was replaced by Zach Coleman. The band was not noticed outside their home region until their debut album Absolution was released in 2015. The album was included in the top 10 of its annual charts by Decibel magazine. The 2016 album Hunted even took first place on this list of the best. After the album was released, the band was offered a tour with Amon Amarth , but the members could not accept due to private commitments. Instead, they went on a tour through the US with Enslaved , Wolves in the Throne Room and Myrkur, financed by Decibel magazine, in February and March . For the first time in Europe , the band could be seen in April at the Roadburn Festival and Doom Over Leipzig . In May the group took part in the Maryland Deathfest , in July in Heavy MONTRÉAL . In mid-2017 the band signed a license agreement with Nuclear Blast . The third album was released in 2018 under the name Desolation , which was released internationally by Nuclear Blast. Like its predecessors, the record was released in the USA by 20 Buck Spin . The release reached number 74 in the German album charts.

style

laut.de wrote that the band was influenced by groups like Mercyful Fate , Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy as well as by a "heavyweight serving of Doom ". In their career, the group moved further and further away from pure Doom Metal, beforethe pace was increasedfrom Hunted onwards, so that a comparison to High on Fire emerged . However, even on Desolation, there is still a sonic parallel to groups like Pallbearer .

Andreas Schiffmann from Rock Hard wrote in his review of Hunted that you can hear Doom Metal in the style of Candlemass and Warning , enriched with its own elements. Above all, "the often increased tempo and the classic metal harmonies" are characteristic of the album, which is suitable for fans of 40 Watt Sun and While Heaven Wept . In a later edition, Ronny Bittner reviewed Desolation : On the album, the band combined "the severity of Doom Metal with the hymn-like melodies of Heavy Metal ", although they did without true metal content ( Grand Magus ) and hard rock riffs ( The Sword ) or a rampant melancholy (Pallbearer). Instead, you bet on "the golden mean between doomy sounds and heart-rending lead guitars". Occasionally the songs are loosened up with modern riffs and growls . Similar to The Sword, however, the “nölige” vocals, while as with Pallbearer, there are no distinctive hook lines . One issue later, Bittner interviewed bassist Beiers, who stated that attempts were made to incorporate more traditional metal into Desolation - Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were among other influences. In addition, the song structures are more complicated than before. The songwriting will be worked out together as a band, although most of the ideas would come from Pendergast and Hutcherson. Personal experiences, global events and the associated emotions are processed in the texts.

According to Katrin Riedl from Metal Hammer , the band combines the music of Sleep and Yob with the guitar sounds of Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden, creating a mixture that sounds like a mix of Mastodon and My Dying Bride . In an interview with her, Beiers named ZZ Top , Judas Priest and Mercyful Fate as influences. The group tries to develop from album to album and also incorporate elements that are not part of the genre. Interesting and dynamic song structures are particularly important to the band. The lyrics of the songs would mostly come from Pendergast, but also from Hutcherson. The singing fluctuates between guttural and clear singing. In the same issue, Lothar Gerber reviewed Desolation and noted that the band, like Pallbearer, combined Doom Metal with occasional modern sludge moments in the style of Baroness . He summarized the music under the term Power Doom . The album is more accessible than its predecessor. Occasionally the vocals are reminiscent of Peter Steele's , but growls in the style of younger Paradise Lost are also audible. The songs also sometimes have musical similarities to Woods of Ypres . Riedl added in the comment that the album was a mixture of "crashing Doom riffs, growls and a voice that dominates all ranges". Marc Halupczok also assigned the album to Epic Doom and described the music as majestic, sublime and wonderful. Petra Schurer described it as a mixture of the "gloom of Mercyful Fate, [the] grandeur of Candlemass" and some rawness. Robert Müller particularly emphasized the high level of musicality and emotionality.
