Kilian Goldstein the Elder (also Chilian Goltstein ; born March 25, 1499 in Kitzingen ; † January 25, 1568 in Halle (Saale) ), was a German lawyer during the Reformation.

Life

Goldstein came from a respected Lower Franconian family. His father Johann Goldstein († 1504) was the son of the father of the same name, who initially worked as town clerk from 1444 and as mayor of Kitzingen from 1466 to 1477. His mother was Sophia Keller, who is sometimes referred to in the documents with the title of nobility von Keller. Since he came from an influential family, Goldstein was able to begin studying at the University of Leipzig in 1515 , which he continued in 1521 at the University of Wittenberg .

There he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in the Faculty of Philosophy on January 10, 1526 and was accepted into the Senate of the Faculty of Philosophy on October 18, 1528. As a private teacher, as a younger graduate of the artists, he directed the private training of the young students and was thus able to earn his living. Having the office of from 12 August 1529 Dean had held the philosophy department, he devoted himself to studying law, was in 1533 procurator at Wittenberg Hofgericht and autumn 1536 for doctoral doctorate in law.

From 1530 and 1533, 1536 and 1539 he was a member of the Wittenberg council as councilor. In 1533 he became procurator at the Leipzig Higher Court , took part in the visitations of churches and schools in the Saxon spa district in 1533/34 and was appointed assessor at the Wittenberg consistory by Elector Johann Friedrich I. He took part in the Worms Religious Discussion 1540/41, where he participated as a secular envoy. After he had taken over the rector's office of the Wittenberg Academy in May 1541 , he was sent to Halle in July of the same year at the suggestion of Justus Jonas the Elder , where he was supposed to support his reform efforts as a syndic .

In 1544 he was officially dismissed from the electoral Saxon service and continued to hold the office of city syndic until his death , with brief interruptions due to the Schmalkaldic War . Goldstein, who was particularly close to Philipp Melanchthon , had earned an excellent reputation among the Wittenberg reformers. Martin Luther valued him, as did the electoral chancellor Gregor Brück .

Because he had also achieved great merits in Halle as a legal representative of the evangelical city authorities, he was buried in the city gods field.
