The Südende villa colony was built in 1873 and grew rapidly after it had its own train station in 1882. Before the formation of Greater Berlin, it still belonged to Mariendorf in the Teltow district and only then came to the Steglitz district. Until the construction of the Südendkirche, the old village church was the only church in the community; it already had over 15,000 inhabitants, most of whom were Protestant. The parish of Südende was affiliated to the Markus parish in 1956, after the inauguration of the rebuilt church on October 20, 1959, it became independent again. In July 1961 the church was named On the Second Coming of Christ . For the meaning of the name, see Parousia .

Building description

The first church was based on plans by Curt Steinberg in the architectural style of the early Modern with baroque built hints and on March 14, 1913 inaugurated . The second church, in contrast to the first, greatly simplified, was designed by Max Schluckebier and inaugurated on September 14, 1958.

Südendkirche

The original hall church was a plastered masonry building with a high pitched roof . It had a central nave with a semicircular apse and a side aisle with a gallery , both separated by arched arcades . The central nave was covered with a coffered barrel vault. It received daylight through arched windows . The high bell tower on a square floor plan was attached to the side of the building. Its tower shaft , structured by paired pilaster strips, was divided by a cornice at the level of the eaves . The following three floors of the tower each tapered over a roof in the form of a truncated pyramid . Above the main cornice was the low floor with the clockwork . Above it was the high floor with the bell- room, structured with pilasters . The last, low floor was crowned with a pyramid roof.

An open portico on Corinthian columns , covered with a barrel roof , was located in front of the facade , the gable of which was decorated with a segment-arched relief .

During the reconstruction the church was changed a lot. Instead of the high roof, the building now has a gently sloping gable roof. In 1964 the parish hall was built directly next to the church . Are instead of arched windows on either side segmental arch windows . The window in the apse, which reaches down to the floor, also has segmental arches.

The campanile, which is completely offset to the side, is built on a rectangular floor plan and covered with a low tent roof. Its entrance is connected to the porch of the church by a covered corridor. At the corners the tower is divided vertically by pilaster strips.

In the tower there are three bronze bells, which were cast by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock from 1957 to 1958 and which form a Te Deum chime after the three starting tones of the medieval Te Deum .

The altar cross forged by Julius Schramm from the old church was erected next to the church during the reconstruction; a Christ relief found its place in the covered corridor. The aisle is separated from the main aisle by smooth pillars, which extend to the flat coffered ceiling.

A tapestry designed by Hermann Kirchberger decorates the altar . The altar window is by Götz Löpelmann, the two colored glass windows in the vestibule are by Hans Wagner .

The baptismal font in the aisle was designed by August Rhades .

The new organ was inaugurated on June 24, 1962.
