Kirkwood is a small community in St. Louis County , Missouri , United States . According to the 2000 census, the city had 27,324 inhabitants on 24.0 km². Kirkwood was founded in 1853 and named after James Pugh Kirkwood , who joined the city on the Pacific Railroad . Close to town are the Barrett's Tunnels along this route.
In the media
The city gained media attention when, on February 7, 2008, Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton stormed into the city council meeting at around 7:00 pm local time with the words "Shoot the mayor" and killed five people and two more injured. He was subsequently shot dead by the police. There were three city council members and two police officers among the victims.
Thornton had already attracted attention at previous public council meetings and had been expelled from the room. On January 28, 2008, US District Judge Catherine Perry dismissed a lawsuit by Thornton who had felt his right to freedom of expression had been violated after he had been arrested twice in 2006 for disrupting a council meeting with personal insults against its members would have.
