The public prosecutor Nina cannot decide to marry her partner and colleague Littmann and prefers to jump into her work. When her best school friend calls her several times to persuade her to go to a class reunion after 15 years, after some hesitation she agrees to get some distance from everyday life. In the Rendsburg province she meets old friends in good company. However, when her old friend Dagmar, who initiated the party, does not appear, she sets out with Detlev and her ex-lover Rainer to look for them. The friends find Dagmar with her wrists cut open in her bathtub.
The case is quickly filed by the police, but Nina does not believe in the suicide and begins to investigate on her own. Suspicious is e.g. B. the doctor who issues the death certificate without further examinations , appears as a patron and donor in public and is known behind the hand as an insatiable Casanova. But Nina also reveals many secrets of her friends who appear to be of integrity to the outside world: there is Marianne, who works in the pharmacy of the dead and covers her husband's fraud with trial drugs, or the politician Georg, who - although married - had a relationship with Dagmar and who is standing in front of an investigative committee because he is said to have helped his friend, the farmer and property owner Detlev, to make big profits when planning a motorway route, or Wolfi, who is now a reporter for a local newspaper and also old friends in the for a good story Dirt pulls.
The investigation stirs up a lot of dust. When the politician Georg, whose career comes to an abrupt end when his affair becomes known, takes his own life, Nina initially doubts the correctness of her questioning. But she is encouraged to carry on by her childhood sweetheart Rainer. When the indications of Dagmar's poisoning harden, the suspected doctor is arrested, who reports of an illegal business with expired medicines and incriminates Brhning, the husband of the dead. This can be asked at the end after a dramatic escalation.

From a harmless celebration overshadowed by tragedy, a story of intricacies develops. The criminal investigation work runs through the entire film, but the actual murder case is basically only resolved at the very end. Ostensibly, the plot revolves rather the many small coterie land, the peccadilloes and not quite as clean pages of characters that ultimately each person has and which are also tolerated by society, as long as one does not respond publicly. These private revelations come to a climax when it becomes clear that the law-abiding prosecutor also has her dark point in the past. She once caused a car accident while drunk, in which her great love was killed. In order to cover up her guilt, she (with Detlev's help) put the dead behind the wheel. A quiet crime story that gets by without exchanges of fire and elaborate stunts and instead illuminates the characters and the everyday small town felt all the more.
