Robert Pope

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Papst (born December 10, 1960 in Ebersberg ) is a German guitarist , music producer and composer for rock music, music for commercials and TV documentaries as well as for film music. He is a founding member of the rock band Dominoe and their producer.

Life

Pope grew up in Grafing in the Upper Bavarian district of Ebersberg and attended the Ignaz-Günther-Gymnasium in Rosenheim . At the age of eleven he played drums, guitar and piano. He gained his first musical experience in school bands. After setting up his first own amateur recording studio, Papst tried his hand at bands like Flick of the Wrist and Radius in the Munich area until the mid-1980s . Robert Papst lives in Grafing near Munich .

Rock band Dominoe

In 1987 Robert Papst met the singer Jörg Sieber (born July 13, 1961 in Ulm ). He founded the band Max with him , which was renamed Dominoe shortly afterwards . Band members were singer and keyboardist Angie Buchzyk, bassist Fred Neudert, drummer Heinz "Rick" Schulz and keyboardist Johnny Rohde.

With the joint debut single Here I Am , which appeared in autumn 1987 and followed the first joint song Family Mad , Pope and Sieber placed a top hit with Dominoe, which the French car manufacturer Renault used in a commercial . The single landed on January 11, 1988 at number 4 in the German single charts and stayed there for 26 weeks. In the Swiss singles charts, the song also came in at number 4 in March 1988 and stayed in the charts for 14 weeks. The title became known far beyond Europe: Gresham Records released a single in South Africa in 1988 . TV appearances in Germany, for example at Formula One , and in France followed. The French chanson singer Sylvie Vartan sang a new version of the title for France.

On the first LP Keep in Touch , Papst worked with the band members in their own Scrabble recording studio in an old farm in Grafing, Papst's hometown. The success with Here I Am made Robert Papst and Dominoe known far beyond Germany overnight. This was followed by Europe-wide live appearances on TV and on stage. Udo Lindenberg later interpreted the title Touch from this album in a German version Wie'n Alter Freund . In 1987 Lindenberg sang the song in Papst's studio in Grafing.

With the follow-up single Let's Talk about Life Dominoe could not build on the first success and only reached middle chart positions. Pope left the band in 1989 as an active stage musician and appeared as their producer. For him came the guitarist Markus Schiegl. During the studio recordings, Pope continued to work as a guitarist.

The second album The Key (1989/1990), which was produced by Papst in collaboration with Faltermeyer, only sold moderately. The first single from it, Angel Don't Cry , was shown as a video clip on MTV , the second single was the ballad Keep the Fire Burnin . After an accompanying tour, Dominoe was dissolved in 1991.

It was not until 2002 that Papst and Sieber decided on a third album entitled No Silence… No Lambs , which they recorded together with new musicians and the Swiss singer Jane Bogaert , who had already worked with Lionel Richie , Udo Lindenberg and Joe Lynn Turner, among others had worked together and competed for Switzerland in 2000 in Stockholm's Eurovision Song Contest.

The fourth album produced by Pope The Story Is Far from Told was released in 2008 and was accompanied by some television appearances. The fifth album Naked But Dressed , which was released in 2012, featured top-class guest musicians who were friends with Pope for the first time, including Jimi Jamison ( Survivor ) on the track Comin 'Home and Naked Larry Hoppen from the American band Orleans , their best-known piece Still the one is.

On the occasion of the Classic Rock Nights 2008 in the Capitol in Hanover , Robert Papst and Jane Bogaert had another live performance with Jimi Jamison and Joe Lynn Turner and on this occasion presented new songs like Irresistible and One More Sugar .

In November 2018 the sixth album The Lost Radio Show was released . It consists of recordings that Dominoe played for a UK radio show in 2008. Parts of these live recordings were lost at the time due to a hard drive crash, so that the planned radio broadcast could not be broadcast. The incomplete parts received have been archived. By chance, Robert Papst rediscovered these excerpts at the beginning of 2018. Most of the tracks recorded in 2008 were used for the album, only the parts that were really lost had to be re-recorded. Former band members and long-time musician friends of Pope's helped to supplement and complete the recordings. This is how Pope managed to capture the atmosphere of the original session with this publication. The positive response from the music scene to the first further release of Dominoe in six years was accompanied by radio and TV interviews.

Anja Blum from the Süddeutsche Zeitung reviews the album The Lost Radio Show : "The advantage of this risk-free stepping through the rock genre using catchy melodies and tried and tested harmonies is that the album can be a kind of soundtrack of their youth for a whole generation. Even who the band - beyond their hit - doesn't know, but grew up with Jon Bon Jovi, Brian Adams and Co., will have a lot of fun with "The Lost Radioshow". (...) Have the craft that is needed for it Pope and Co. never forgot anyway. The album is well produced, it keeps the balance between professionalism and authenticity with a steady hand, and the musicians leave nothing to be desired technically. "

Robert Papst is the only one in the Dominoe group who could still appear noticeably after the band split up. His musical formation and further work can best be summed up in the words of Survivor guitarist Frankie Sullivan - and his view of Adult Orientated Rock (AOR) - as follows: "In the seventies, the musicians were in the foreground - long solos and jam- Sessions determined what happened on the stage. In the eighties the song moved a little more into focus. There were still good musicians around, but people wanted to hear songs that were like the soundtrack to their own lives. From 1983 to 1988 it was a real pleasure to listen to the radio. "

Producer, composer, musician

Productions for various artists

In 1988 Pope wrote his first score for the sports-action film by Jochen Schweizer , Family Mad .

Papst produced artists such as Willy Astor , Dan Lucas (winner of the first season of the TV format The Voice Senior ), Jane Bogaert, Pino Panduri, Angie Layne and the Swiss rock band Daytona.

The single Heart of America with Dan Lucas was used in a McDonald’s advertisement in 1994 and reached chart positions. Papst produced five CDs for Willy Astor from 1991 to 1995. Papst realized the album No more Money , originally written for Dominoe, with Dominoe singer Jörg Sieber under his stage name Jay Seevers in 1994. The song Dominoe History is a reminder of the band's history. That's what youre looking for became known through the Hanuta advertisement. Papst, Ed Straker and Günther Skitschak worked as studio musicians, with whom Papst realized many other productions together. With Horst Rohrmüller, Papst wrote Out of My Mind by Mr. Freaky (singer: Angie Buchzyk), an Italo-Disco single that became known primarily in Switzerland and successfully entered the local charts.

For the comedy series Die Feuchtgrubers , which ran on the radio station Antenne Bayern from 1990 to 1999 , Papst produced the MCs, which were a complete success for Antenne Bayern.

In 2000 the album Still Paying My Dues to the Blues by Uriah Heep singer John Lawton was created by Pope.

In 2000, Papst founded the Scoreworx company, in which he also gave young talents the opportunity to work on film music projects. Among other things, he composed the title Bye Bye Bye in 2010 for the young German band Janina and the Deeds, which he founded and produced , which was used in a commercial by the detergent brand Ariel . Papst was active again in the band as a guitarist and wrote the songs for the pop rock band together with musician colleagues .

He was able to win over his long-time companions and musician friends John Rhino Edwards of Status Quo , Matt Beck of Matchbox Twenty and Charlie Morgan (ex-drummer of, among others, Elton John , Tina Turner and Paul McCartney ) to participate in the Jane Bogaert album Fifth Dimension . The Journey singer Jeff Scott Soto and Joe Lynn Turner ( Rainbow , Deep Purple ) can be heard as guest singers on this album.

Music for cinema / TV and advertising

Since 1990 he has been writing and editing the music for well over six hundred TV and radio commercials for Germany and abroad in his recording studio , the score for over ninety films (e.g. Der Pfundskerl , a TV series with Ottfried Fischer ) , TV productions like Entweder Broder and TV documentaries like 90 Minuten are no life .

For decades, Papst made the music for commercials for his customers such as Audi , Procter & Gamble , ADAC , Lufthansa , Ferrero , Unicef , Sarotti , Meister Proper , Mercedes Benz , McDonald's, Bosch , Siemens , Bauknecht , BMW , Vernel , Licher , Warsteiner , Erdinger Wheat beer , Marlboro , Rolls-Royce . Some of the spots for which Pope contributed the music were broadcast worldwide, such as the song That's the Way I Like It for Pampers , for which he was able to win over Sennie "Skip" Martin, the lead singer of the band Kool And The Gang .

Among other things, Robert Papst wrote the music for the film in the opening sequence on the occasion of the state ceremony "60 Years of the Federal Republic of Germany" on May 22, 2009.

Papst is also responsible for post-production (music) for many TV and cinema productions.

Most recently he wrote the music for the feature film Kill Me Today, Tomorrow I'm Sick!, Which was nominated at the Montreal World Film Festival in September 2018 . ,which will celebrate its cinema premiere in spring 2019. The tragic comedy takes place in Kosovo in 1999, for whose film music Pope "recreated the attitude towards life" by composing "a musical journey through time to the Balkans of the 1990s" and imitating Yugo-Pop, Serbian rock, oriental disco , Albanian folklore " , researched for stylish sounds and rhythms, first wrote the text and then translated " and created a " classic, punchy rock song in the style of the 90s " with the title song . The film was awarded the "Silver Zenith" in the "First Fiction Films Competition" category in Montreal on September 3, 2018.
