Klaus Martens (2004)

Klaus Martens (born September 7, 1944 in Kirchdorf) is a German literary scholar , poet , essayist , editor and literary translator .

Live and act

Martens attended high school on Waller Ring in Bremen and graduated from high school. From 1965 to 1971 he studied English and German at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . He passed the first state examination in 1971 and the second state examination in 1976. From 1968 to 1969 he worked as an instructor for German literature and language at Reed College in Portland (Oregon) . From 1972 to 1974 he was a doctoral candidate at Yale University in New Haven (Connecticut) and was supported by a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). As a teacher , he worked from 1975 to 1980 on Hainberg-Gymnasium Göttingen . In 1979 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . 1980 to 1982 he was a Research Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies at Yale University and Harvard University . In 1984 he completed his habilitation. From 1983 to 1988 Martens was a research associate and sub-project manager of the Collaborative Research Center 309 The Literary Translation . Between 1979 and 1989 he received teaching positions at the Universities of Göttingen, Münster and Kassel and was a substitute professor at the University of Saarbrücken . In 1989 he became an adjunct professor in Göttingen. From 1990 to 2009 he was professor for North American literature and culture (NALK) and from 1994 founder and director of the Center for Canadian and Anglo-American Cultures (CCAC) at Saarland University.

Martens has published as a poet for over thirty years. His work has appeared in numerous leading literary journals and anthologies and has been translated into English, Japanese and Italian. As a literary translator from English, he is responsible for individual or work translations and the like. a. by Elizabeth Bishop, Thomas Lux, Wallace Stevens, and Derek Walcott. Martens' reading tours took him through Germany and upon invitation (2014) through several states in the USA.

Klaus Martens is married to the ceramic sculptor Eva Wieting-Martens, who created plastic mask portraits of him and processed excerpts from his lyrical works (e.g. cycle “Cover ups” of 15 wall sculptures in the foyer of the Deutsches Theater, Göttingen).

Memberships: PEN Center Germany (since 1996), Association of German Writers (VS, since 1994), Authors' Association Die Kogge , Saarländisches Künstlerhaus, Modern Language Association, Canadian Comparative Literature Association, Society for Canadian Studies. A deposit of the books, works, manuscripts etc. as well as his collections on Felix Paul Greve / Frederick Philip Grove and the JCC Bruns Verlag is in the literary archive Saar-Lor-Lux-Alsace of the Saarland State and University Library, Saarbrücken.
