Holy Cross Monastery (Augsburg)
Catholic and Protestant Holy Cross Church |
The Heilig Kreuz monastery is a former Augustinian canon monastery in Augsburg in Bavaria in the diocese of Augsburg . It has been a Dominican monastery since 1936 . The Catholic and Protestant Holy Cross Church are also located on the site .
history
The Augustinian canon monastery "St. Nikolas im Holz" was moved from Muttershofen ( Lützelburg ) to the Augsburg suburb in 1159/67 by Bishop Konrad von Augsburg . Before that, there was a pilgrims' hospice "to the Holy Cross" at this point, which was set up in the time of Bishop Ulrich . In 1199 the pilgrimage to the blood host "Wunderbarliches Gut" was started. In the years 1239 to 1245 the monastery was re-established under the patronage of the Holy Spirit and was initially looked after by lay brothers from the Holy Spirit Hospital .
The cathedral chapter prevented the episcopal repeal in 1256/61. Around 1400 the monastery hit a serious crisis which also affected the neighboring St. Georg monastery . With the reform of 1475, spiritual prosperity began. From 1492 to 1508 a collegiate church (Catholic Holy Cross Church) was built. With the ban on the Catholic mass in Augsburg during the Reformation , the convent had to go into exile from 1537 to 1546. The Ottmar Chapel has been in the monastery cemetery since 1210 ; it was rebuilt in 1450 and transferred to the Protestants in 1525 (Protestant Holy Cross Church).
The monastery was dissolved in 1802/03 in the course of secularization and converted into barracks. When it was abolished, 23 canons still lived in the convent. The church became a branch of the cathedral parish with a pilgrimage benefit. A construction school was later housed in the monastery buildings. In 1932, Dominicans took over the monastery complex from Heilig Kreuz.
Manorial rule
A donation from Bishop Walter (I.) von Dillingen in 1150 laid the foundation stone for the properties of the hospital and later Augustinian canons' monastery.
The extensive district around Margetshausen developed into the center of the East Swabian possessions. At the beginning of the 18th century, the office of the same name with bailiwick rights that had also fallen to the monastery administered the localities that were fully or partially subject to the monastery with lower jurisdiction . The other properties were grouped together as smaller holdings.
The place where the monastery was founded, Muttershofen, remained in his possession even after the monastery was moved to Augsburg.
