history
History meaning of the place name
Knellendorf was still called "Knellenrod bey der Haßlach" in 1348. From 1520 the name "Knellendorf" emerges from documents of the parish of Kronach. According to the local history, the place name originated either from the village of Knello or it is derived from "Nell" (hill).
First documentary mention
It is unclear when Knellendorf was created or was first mentioned. In the Knellendorfer Chronik reference is made to a first documentary mention in 1388. The Langheim Monastery in Teuschnitz sold land to Bambers' Bishop Lambers.
Village linden from 1648
The linden tree , which was planted as a peace linden tree on barren gravel ground in 1648, is striking . In 1951 the tree in the big fork was lined with brick. In the 1990s, the main branches had to be secured with steel cables and struts because the wood creaked suspiciously even in moderate winds. Further professional security measures followed. For several years the Lindenfest has been taking place with a service in front of the landmark.
Gundelsdorf subcamp
In neighboring Gundelsdorf there was a satellite camp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp from autumn 1944 until the invasion of American troops in April 1945 . The prisoners were 100 Polish Jewish women deported from the Plaszow concentration camp and up to 90 Jewish men of different nationalities who were brought here from various other camps. The majority were used as forced labor in the Air Force replenishment warehouse in Gundelsdorf, around 20 of the women had to sew military uniforms in a Knellendorf company. Since 2002, a memorial stone erected on the initiative of the Evangelical Youth on the cycle and footpath between the two places running parallel to Bundesstraße 85 has been a reminder of the subcamp.
