This list reflects the updates from April 30, 2020 and contains 399 architectural monuments.

Ensembles

Old town Kronach

Rosenberg Fortress
Andreas-Limmer-Strasse
Adolf-Kolping-Strasse

The ensemble includes the old town of Kronach with the so-called Upper Town and the Lower Town in their historically traditional parts as well as the elevated Rosenberg Fortress north of it . The city of Kronach, located on the old trade fair connection between Leipzig and Nuremberg, in the gusset of the Haßlach and Kronach estuaries , has a three-tier structure. The highest area is taken by the Rosenberg Fortress, which originally dates back to the 13th century and has been expanded into an impressive castle over the centuries. It was first mentioned in a document in 1249. As the northern cornerstone of the Bamberg Monastery, the fortress dominated the area of the “Praedium Crana”, which came to Bamberg in 1122 for centuries, and offered protection in all major wars for the inhabitants of Kronach, which was mentioned in 1003.

To the south of the fortress, a little lower on a mountain spur, lies the upper town, fortified with walls, towers and gates , which was preceded by a regional castle as a complex of the Meranians in Ottonian times. Its triangular floor plan is adapted to the topographical conditions. Two parallel streets lead from the small, also triangular church square (Melchior-Otto-Platz) on gently sloping terrain to the market square. Walling and moat have been proven for the upper town as early as 1323/33. Military events such as the Hussite incursions in the 15th century or the Thirty Years' War with the siege of Sweden led to significant reinforcements of these defenses. Even today, some of the formerly numerous towers of the city wall determine the silhouette of the upper town. Of the three large gates, however, only the so-called Bamberg Gate has been preserved. The bourgeois development of the upper town is essentially late medieval and consists mainly of eaves and gable, two to three-story half-timbered buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries with massive, often older, ground floors made of sandstone ashlar masonry. The essentially Gothic Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptista was built between the 14th and 17th centuries. Complementary buildings from the 19th century, for example the school buildings on Melchior-Otto-Platz or in the upper Amtsgerichtsstrasse and on the market square fit harmoniously into the image of the older houses in the sense of a romantic cityscape. The greatest loss of historical building material in the otherwise very closed urban structure of the upper town occurred through the new construction of the town hall (1972-75) instead of town houses.

The imposing building of the former prince-bishop's box floor, which was erected between 1798 and 1802 and is now a penal institution , located between the upper town and the fortress, forms the link between these two parts of the ensemble.

The Upper Town is subordinated to the Lower Town, consisting of three old suburbs that have grown together today. The irregular floor plan structure with its sometimes angled alleys and streets refers to the largely unregulated development.

The eastern suburb, located on the Kronach, has its origin in a Thuringian settlement, the destruction of which is proven by the state castle "urbs crana" 1003. The Fronhof, already mentioned at the end of the eleventh century, probably the economic center of this settlement, is still alive today in the form of the baroque row of barns on the Kaulanger. Mostly two-storey gable-independent half-timbered buildings from the 17th / 18th centuries. Century have been preserved mainly in the Andreas-Limmer-Straße leading to Kronach. Towards the upper town, the "old town" underwent an expansion in the second half of the 19th century, mostly in the form of sandstone blocks.

The southern suburb, between the St. Anna Hospital Church on the Kronach (15th century) and the Haßlach, is dominated particularly impressively on Marienplatz by the Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptista, which in the southern part of the upper town with its western building is close to the towering one The city wall stands, as well as the baroque rectory and the parish tower from the 16th century. Along Schwedenstrasse, parallel to the western upper town wall, there is a uniform gable-side development, mostly in half-timbered houses, from the 16th / 17th centuries. Century, while at Marienplatz sandstone buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries predominate.

The third suburb, located mainly on the western bank of the Haßlach, shows a largely uniform development of the 17th and 18th centuries along Adolf-Kolping-Straße, Klosterstraße and in Krahenberg. Century mostly in the form of gable-independent two- to three-story half-timbered buildings with massive, often older basement floors and slated or plastered upper floors.

In the Lower City, the ensemble in the area of Hussitenplatz already experienced serious disruptions due to the construction of a new department store and the large buildings on Güterstrasse that were out of scale. In addition, the structural substance was already reduced in the second half of the 20th century through reshaping and new buildings adapted in terms of cubature , and the cityscape was changed through redensification. The two mill canals that formerly flowed through the lower town, fed by Kronach and Haßlach, are also no longer passed down and can only be traced back to the parcels. (File number E-4-76-145-1)

Wayside shrine Sandstone Column, 1700

This land monument was originally in Friedersdorf , a district of the Pressig market . The founder was a woman who usually had to bring grain from the farm to a mill in the Thuringian neighboring town of Heinersdorf at night and was probably frightened in the dark forest. In order to appease the supposed dark forces there, she had this wayside shrine built and is said not to have been bothered in the forest afterwards. The hall monument rests on a base, the four fields of which are diamond-coated . A smooth column shaft rises from a base, the upper part of which is inscribed with the year “1745”. At the base of the top, which is closed by a round arch, there are the destroyed remains of an inscription that stretches across the north, west and south sides and ends with the year "1700". The reliefs, separated by corner templates decorated with rings, show the coronation of Mary on the west side , St. Agatha on the north side and St. Barbara on the south side ; the east side is empty.

Base and top of a wayside shrine Sandstone, 18th century

This hall monument was put together from fragments of various other wayside shrines. The weathered base comes from an old wayside shrine from Zeyern ; its front side shows a wreath, the east and west sides are decorated with fruit hangings and on the back there is a relief rectangle. The pillar shaft, which is fielded and not decorated with jewelry, was made anew by the Kronach sculptor Heinrich Schreiber . It bears the essay from the 18th century, which originally belonged to a wayside shrine at the northwest end of the bird herd. At its front, under the drawn-in arch, there is a pictorial niche flanked by two strong volutes , in which a relief of the crucifixion group is embedded.

The concave-convex base of this land monument is marked on the west side with the year "1769". The four sides of the divided pillar shaft are decorated with bands . A stepped capital carries the four-sided attachment, which is crowned with a stone ball and whose base and the recessed round arches are decorated with a leaf frieze . The reliefs show St. Peter to the east, the coronation of Mary to the west, St. Barbara to the south and the Glosberg Mother of God to the north. A statue of the Virgin Mary in the pilgrimage site north of the district town of Kronach is said to have cried bloody tears several times in 1727, which is why this motif can be found on numerous wayside shrines in the Franconian Forest .

Wayside chapel 19th century

This chapel was built in 1966 by the Catholic journeyman's association in Kronach to promote the idea of ecumenism between the Christian denominations. In the interior there are several works by the Kronach sculptor Heinrich Schreiber. A vertically rising sandstone slab with a representation of the Last Supper fulfills the function of the altar. Further components of the equipment are a modern crucifix anchored in the stone and a bronze chandelier standing next to it. A marble plaque on the outer wall commemorates Heinrich Förster from Kronach, who died on June 24, 1972 ( St. John's Day ) in a traffic accident at the location of the chapel.

During renovation work in 2010, an inscription with the initials "ABW" and the year 1736 was uncovered above the entrance door of the chapel. The entire back wall in the interior of the building was covered by a sheet metal panel from the 19th century, which shows a representation of the fourteen helpers and is attributed to the Kronach artist Lorenz Kaim. The board was removed in the course of the construction work and will be presented in a museum after restoration. As a replacement, ceramic panels made by the Kronach sculptor Heinrich Schreiber were installed in the chapel, which also show the fourteen helpers in need.

Catholic Chapel of St. Joseph Gable roof construction closed on three sides with turrets and slate covering, neo-Gothic, 1883, renovated in 1975

The neo-Gothic chapel was donated in 1883 by the economist Georg Wich as a thank you for recovering from a severe physical ailment. The bell tower was added a few years later; the two predecessors of today's two hundredweight bell were melted down during the First and Second World Wars to extract war materials. In 1972 the chapel had to make way for the new building of the youth home and was rebuilt in 1974 about 20 meters north of the old location.

Wayside shrine, known as Schulles torture Sandstone, pillars and four-sided top with arched gables, stone ball and iron cross, 18th century

This 18th century hall monument was probably not built until the 19th or 20th century as a replacement for an older wayside shrine. The concave-convex base carries a pillar shaft with the inscription "To the honor of the Holy Family". Below the inscription is a rosette in relief . The top is closed by retracted round arches and crowned with a stone ball and an iron cross. The reliefs on the four sides show the Holy Family , a cross with an adoring donor, the Christ monogram , also with a worshiper, and a representation of St. Andrew. According to tradition, the ancestors of the owners had the land monument built out of gratitude after they had taken in a foundling abandoned in the vicinity of the previous monument and subsequently experienced private and economic happiness.

In 1980 the wayside shrine had to be temporarily dismantled for the expansion of the neighboring street. While working on the foundation, an almost undamaged wayside shrine with a round-arched picture niche was discovered that had been used as a rolling . A sandstone relief with the coronation of Mary and the year 1707, which was kept by the owner of the wayside shrine, made it possible to date this former wayside shrine.

The relief fields of the essay are separated by corner templates. The coronation of Mary is depicted on the east side and Saint Barbara on the north side. On the arch above the saint there is the inscription “St. Barbara Bitt For Us ”. The west side shows an incised cross and the south side shows Saint Matthias . The round arch above the depiction of the apostle bears the inscription “St. Matthias Bitt For us ”. The hall monument commemorates a man who is said to have been killed in a trade dispute.

The base of the wayside shrine is fielded on three sides, the reverse bears the inscription "H 1693 H". A smooth pillar shaft rests on the base, which carries the top closed with a round arch and crowned with a stone ball. At the bottom of the top there is a medallion without an inscription, which is flanked by volutes. In the three picture niches there are bronze reliefs depicting the fourteen helpers in need , which were made in 1967 by the Kronach sculptor Heinrich Schreiber. The hall monument was erected in memory of the previous owner of a property located a little outside the village. This house had no brewing rights, which is why beer had to be fetched from the nearby town. The homeowner is said to have been killed one night while fetching beer at the location of the wayside shrine.

From the original wayside shrine, only the concave-convex base and the two-sided top, closed with a round arch, have survived. The relief on the front side shows the Glosberg Mother of God. The heavily weathered initials "STS" were carved as an inscription in a small cartridge under the relief. On the back of the top there is an incised trefoil cross , the crossbar of which is marked with the year "1736". Small crosses can be seen on the two narrow sides. In 1976 the wayside shrine was renovated and completed with a newly created pillar. The hall memorial is supposed to remind of a "Aufschläger" (probably an ancient name for a customs officer ) who is said to have committed suicide at the location of the wayside shrine.

The concave-convex shaped base bears the inscription "Erected for the glory of God and his saints in the war year 1914:18" on the west side. The inscription “Dedicated by Matthäus Burger Sculptor” is carved on the east side. The pillar shaft is divided and decorated with banding. It carries the top, closed by round arches and provided with a tin roof, the four reliefs of which show a Vesper image, the Holy Family, the Coronation of Mary and the Fourteen Holy Helpers with the Child Jesus. The Frisian sculptor Matthäus Burger created many of the land monuments in the Franconian Forest at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The client of this wayside shrine is said to have run out of funds, which is why he left the ordered work of art in the sculptor's workshop. Since he could not find another buyer for the wayside shrine, he set it up on his own property.

This neo-Gothic chapel was built in 1905 and consecrated on July 15, 1906. It was supposed to provide a focal point for the Corpus Christi procession on the then treeless mountain slope. The small bell in the bell tower was on loan for several years in Thonberg , south of the district town of Kronach , before the local church St. Josef was given its own bell.

Wayside shrine Sandstone, with three sides in relief, 18th century; embedded in modern pillars

This wayside shrine, the back half of which is missing, was integrated into the garden wall of the now abandoned monument at Breitenloh 78, before it was renovated in 1974 and a modern pillar was added to form a complete wayside shrine. In 1985 the hall monument was moved to its current location in the school courtyard. The essay ends with a very flat arch, the individual fields are separated from each other by corner templates that end in volutes at the base. The relief on the front side shows St. John Nepomuk with a crucifix and a martyr's palm , on the narrow sides there is a picture of Vespers and a man with a child in his arms, probably St. Anthony of Padua .

The concave-convex base is marked on the south side with the inscription "AD 1779". The sinuous column shaft decorated with grapes and vine tendrils rises from the base, the upper part of which, together with the Ionic capital, was destroyed in a fall in 1962. The essay, closed by retracted round arches, shows reliefs of the Glosberg Mother of God, the coronation of Mary, the evangelist John and St. Nicholas on its four sides . The former crowning of the top with a stone ball and an iron trefoil cross was also destroyed in the fall.

Forest Chapel of St. Mary Sandstone block construction with pillared porch and gable roof, 1848

In 1844, the mother of God is said to have appeared to a shepherd boy on the Rauschenberg, who was to be built in honor of a chapel. However, construction was not carried out until 1848, after the farmers' harvests had been almost completely destroyed by hailstorms between 1845 and 1847, which was associated with the delays in the construction of the chapel. The building was made of sandstone blocks and has a gable roof that is pulled far forward and is supported by two columns. Above the entrance hangs a picture on the wood-paneled gable, which shows Mary, surrounded by a halo and angels, standing on clouds with the baby Jesus.

Wayside shrine Sandstone, 18th century

This wayside shrine was found again in 1955 in the garden of the former mayor of Höfles, August Schubert. The wayside shrine that goes with it probably once stood on the so-called “Marteracker”, a property east of Höfles. The essay shows two heavily weathered reliefs framed by acanthus : the coronation of Mary and Christ on the Mount of Olives . In 1996 the top was supplemented with a newly made plinth, which is marked with the year of the renovation, and a simple column again to form a complete shrine.

Wayside shrine fragment Sandstone, 17th / 18th centuries century

The fragment is the strongly weathered square base of a wayside shrine, which stands in a recessed, beveled bearing plate. Three of its sides were once decorated with leaves in relief, the fourth shows a no longer identifiable coat of arms . The reason for the erection of the wayside shrine is said to have been a rider who fell from his horse at the site of the monument and died of the injuries suffered. The coat of arms indicates that the man was a nobleman .

Wayside chapel Sandstone block construction, 18th century

This chapel, made of sandstone blocks with a curved tin roof, was built out of gratitude for surviving the plague . In the interior, a sandstone slab is embedded in the back wall, which shows the Archangel Michael with a raised sword as a soul weigher as a relief . In the altar stone below the relief the inscription "God and his dear saints in honor / Sebastian Müller Popp zu Neussig has this figure / let make 1710" is carved. According to the will of the builders, the chapel was to be inaugurated by the then Bamberg Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn . He appeared with a larger retinue in Neuses, but left without having achieved anything when he saw the comparatively small chapel with a base of 1.8 × 1.5 m.

Wayside shrine Sandstone, two-tiered, bulbous pillar and top with arched roof, stone ball and double iron cross, 1829

The base of this wayside shrine has a concave-convex profile and bears a weathered inscription and the year 1829 on the front. On the base there is a two-tier, baluster-shaped shaft, which carries the top with arched roof, stone ball and double cross bar. The front of the essay shows a representation of the Trinity , on the two narrow sides there are reliefs of St. Henry and the cross with Mary Magdalene underneath. The reason for the erection of this land monument was an accident in which the founder broke both legs. He vowed to have a wayside shrine placed when he recovered.

The son of a wealthy farmer from Kathragrub is said to have died at the location of this chapel. The young man had gone to the town of Kronach to be vaccinated against smallpox . He was instructed that in order to prevent complications in connection with the vaccination, among other things, he would have to refrain from drinking alcohol for several days. Nevertheless, the man stopped in a tavern to eat and drink before making his way back. At the place where the chapel was built, his strength is said to have left him.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The monument property - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the monument atlas or the entry in the Bavarian monument list. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
