Konrad Manthey

Konrad Manthey (born August 4, 1928 in Pockau ; † January 10, 2010 in Mönchengladbach ) was a German major general.

Life

Youth and education

He spent his youth in West Prussia . The flight and expulsion of Germans from Central and Eastern Europe from 1945 to 1950 brought him to Schleswig-Holstein . In 1945 he started an apprenticeship as a carpenter and passed the journeyman's examination . After passing a special school leaving examination, he started studying economics at the University of Hamburg . In the winter semester of 1953/54 he became active in the Corps Albertina Hamburg.

Service in the troops

Promotions

Shortly after their formation, he joined the Bundeswehr on July 1, 1956 . In officer training until the end of December 1957, he became platoon leader on January 1, 1958 in Grenadier Battalion 11 , which was stationed in Hamburg. He was transferred to Grenadier Battalion 46 in Boostedt on February 15, 1960. When the battalion was relocated to Bad Segeberg , the unit was renamed Grenadier Battalion 182 . In Itzehoe he took over the command of a company in Grenadier Battalion 171 on February 16, 1960. On September 30, 1962, he became company commander in Jäger Battalion 67 at the same location .

Training as general staff and battalion commander

He then went to Hamburg at the command academy of the Bundeswehr for the 5th Army General Staff Course from October 1, 1962 to September 30, 1964. On October 1, 1964, he was transferred to the 6th Panzer Grenadier Division in Neumünster , where he was on the staff of the G2- Function in communications. On April 1, 1966, he took over the G3 staff function for operations in Panzergrenadierbrigade 16 , which was then stationed in Flensburg . He became commander of the 212 Panzer Grenadier Battalion in Delmenhorst on October 1, 1968.

Staff function at NATO and in the Federal Ministry

He was transferred to Karup on October 1, 1970, where he took on new tasks as a G3 officer at the headquarters of the Allied Command Baltic Approaches (BALTAP). In the 11th Panzer Grenadier Division in Oldenburg (Oldenburg) he became Chief of Staff on March 26, 1973 . On April 1, 1975 he became the commander of Panzer Brigade 34 , which was stationed in Hofgeismar . From October 1, 1977, he became head of staff department in the Federal Ministry of Defense at the command staff of Army III in Bonn . He took command of the 6th Panzer Grenadier Division on October 1, 1979. From April 1, 1983, he was in command of the Northern Territorial Command until his end of service on September 30, 1988.
