Career
Uladsimir Kopaz began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with Dinamo Minsk , which was renamed Tiwali Minsk from 1993. After only one year he moved to his league rival Torpedo Yaroslavl , with whom he became Russian champion in the 1996/97 season . In the following years, the left shooter initially stayed in the super league, in which he was used from 1998 for Severstal Tscherepowez , SKA Saint Petersburg , Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk and Krylya Sovetov Moscow .
After only eight games with Krylya Sowetow Moscow, Kopaz signed at the beginning of the 2002/03 season with HK Keramin Minsk , with whom he won the East European Hockey League in 2003 and 2004 respectively . Following the two championship titles, he was hired by Keramin's city neighbor HK Junost Minsk , with whom he became Belarusian champions in 2005 and 2006. At the European level, the 2002 Olympic participant with Junost Minsk also won the IIHF Continental Cup in the 2006/07 season and was named the best defender of the final tournament. There was worldwide media interest in his person during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, when he shot the blatant underdog Belarus to victory in the quarter-final against Sweden a few minutes before the end of the game. Kopaz led the puck into the neutral zone and overcame Sweden's goalkeeper Tommy Salo with a slap shot from 20 meters, which first hit him on the mask and then rolled over his back into the goal.
