The city of Corfu ( Greek Κέρκυρα Kerkyra ( f. Sg. )) Is the capital of the Greek island of the same name Corfu and the administrative seat of the municipality of Kerkyra with 32,095 inhabitants. It is located on the east coast on a north-west sloping promontory, has an international airport and a safe harbor, which is connected by shipping lines with Brindisi , Venice , Patras and Igoumenitsa as well as Saranda (Albania).
history
Approx. 590 BC The Artemis Temple was built in the ancient Kerkyra , of which only a few remains have survived. Corfu was the first Greek city to submit in 229 BC. BC the Roman Empire . In 1204 Corfu became part of the Republic of Venice . In 1716 there was a siege by Ottoman troops , which was successfully repulsed by Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg , who was in the Venetian service. In 1815 Corfu became the capital of the independent Ionian island republic . The Ionian University , founded in 1824, is the oldest of the modern Greek universities . In 1864, Corfu finally came to Greece.
In 2007, the old town of Corfu which was UNESCO list of World Heritage added.

- Old fortress
The old fortress (Palaió Froúrio) was built by the Venetians in the 16th century. To secure the fortress, a canal was dug between protective walls and the adjoining mainland. The fortress initially housed the entire city, until it finally expanded to the west.
- New fortress
Start of construction in 1576, end of construction in 1645. Many underground passages should run under the New Fortress, which extend to the Old Fortress and connect them with one another.
