action
The French astronomer Catherine Durand decodes a signal from space that is recognizably of intelligent origin . Shortly after she informed NATO and armed forces were mobilized, the earth came under fire. Countless objects , initially thought to be meteors , hit all the important centers of the earth. Neurologist Bill Ward realizes that the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the objects is deadly to humans and warns his son, who works in the British government's command center.
All people who did not manage to seek protection underground in time, in cellars, underground garages or in subway stations, are exposed to the radiation and die. The survivors, including Sarah Greshman with her children Tom and Emily, the refugee Kariem Gat Wich Machar, who survived inside a tank truck, as well as Bill Ward and his ex-wife Helen Brown, try to cope with the invaders who initially settled show in the form of four-legged dog-like robots to evade.
After Bill and Helen find their son dead in the command center, they meet Sarah, Tom and Emily as well as Kariem, who made it to England from Calais, and Ash, who is caring for babies in a hospital. When the hospital is attacked by the robots, the group has to flee. It later emerges that the invaders have shown a keen interest in infants and in fetuses they harvest from pregnant women. The blind Emily develops a strange spiritual connection to the aliens, which shows, among other things, that she hears a pulsating signal and regains her eyesight when the four-legged friends approach.
At the same time, Jonathan, Sarah's husband and Emily and Tom's stepfather, tries to get back to England from France. He meets Chloe and her son Sacha, who join him. Sacha feels a similar, but not quite as strong contact with the aliens as Emily. There also seems to be a connection between the two young people, even though they have never met.
In the French Alps above Grenoble , Catherine, along with Colonel Mokrani and his troops, found a destroyed spaceship with the remains of biological organisms. They realize that a signal they sent themselves from their observatory disrupted the ship's systems and caused it to crash. This knowledge helps them to fend off the robots that attack them again and again.
Emily breaks up with Kariem, with whom she has developed a relationship, to find answers and to search for the aliens. The two find a wrecked spaceship lying in the Thames, which Emily enters. On a kind of command chair, she finds a human-like being who has the same circular tattoo on her wrist as herself (and which she got stung at the beginning of the plot).

reception
Joachim Huber praises the series in the Tagesspiegel for its “hard realism”, for “best science fiction”, for “surprisingly little heroism” and states that it can certainly be measured against the great role models of the previous adaptations. In contrast, Martin Seng missing on Quotenmeter.de "a livelier performance" and called War of the Worlds as "predominantly stress", although "the fears of the characters quite noticeably" were.
