Kristina Hendel , née Kristina Božić (born May 13, 1996 ) is a Croatian athlete who specializes in middle-distance and long-distance running.

Career

As a 16-year-old Kristina Božić caused a sensation for the first time at the Croatian championships. On July 21, 2012 she was Croatian runner - up in the 3000 meter obstacle course behind Nikolina Hrelec and one day later she finished fifth in the 3000 meter run . She then took part in the Junior World Championships in Barcelona , where she was eliminated in the obstacle course as twelfth of her run. A year later, she secured a Croatian championship title for the first time. On June 8, 2013 she won the Croatian championship in Zagreb in 10: 49.70 minutes over the 3000 meter obstacle and one day later she secured the bronze medal in the 3000 meter run behind Lisa Christina Nemec and Matea Matošević . At the youth world championships in Donetsk she reached the final and finished there in 13th place. Then she took part in the Junior European Championships in Rieti , where she could not qualify for the final.

On July 12, 2014 she started for the third time in the Croatian championships and was able to successfully defend her title over the 3000 meter obstacle in 10: 55.34 minutes. A day later she missed her first championship title over the 3000 meters behind Matea Parlov and had to be content with the runner-up title. Hendel again took part in the Junior World Championships in Eugene , but did not make it into the final again. One year later, on April 25, 2015, she started at the Croatian championship in the 10,000-meter run in Božjakovina and immediately won the competition in 37: 00.8 minutes. So she was able to win her third Croatian championship. On July 25, 2015, she also took part in the real Croatian athletics championships, which were held in Varaždin . There she started in the 3000 meter obstacle course and won the Croatian championship in this discipline for the third time in a row. Then she finished 14th in the final at the Junior European Championships in Eskilstuna .

After she was able to start in two competitions due to her pregnancy in 2016, she made her debut at the City Run in Korschenbroich on April 2, 2017 . In these road races over the five kilometers, she finished eighth in a time of 16:35 minutes. A few days later, she took part in the Croatian 10,000 meter championship and secured the second championship title over this distance in 35: 10.3 minutes. At the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz , Poland , she finished eleventh over 5000 meters and 15th over 10,000 meters. On February 24, 2018, she started the Croatian indoor championship in the 3000 meter run and won in 9: 47.82 minutes.

On May 26, 2018, she started at the IFAM meeting in Oordegem, Belgium , where she started in the 3000 meter obstacle course. In this competition she not only increased her personal best by more than 25 seconds, but also improved Lisa Christina Nemec's previous Croatian record in this discipline to 10: 02.20 minutes.

In July 2016 she married the German athlete Sebastian Hendel , whom she met while studying at Iona College in New York City . After the wedding they moved to Germany and there they gave birth to their first son on October 12, 2016.
