action

The main theme and framework of the film is the mother-son conflict between Bertha and Alfried Krupp . The film begins one evening in 1957. Arndt , son of Alfried Krupp and future sole heir, does not meet grandmother Bertha's expectations. After a heated argument between Alfried and Bertha, she reminisces about the past. Beginning with her childhood, when Kaiser Wilhelm II had her own room in the Villa Hügel and even arranged her marriage to Gustav von Bohlen and Halbach , the plot spans the entire first half of the 20th century. At the same time, son Alfried, together with brother Harald, remembers his disciplined childhood, his failed marriage and his role in the family business. The film ends in 1967 with the death of Alfried, who converted the company into a foundation.

background

The film was shot at 40 locations around the world with around 100 actors and over 2000 extras . The real Villa Hügel could not be used as there was no filming permit for it. Instead, Nordkirchen Castle in the Münsterland was used as the outer facade . Some interior shots (chapel, dining room and imperial room) were shot in Herdringen Castle near Arnsberg. The facilities of the Zeche Zollern II / IV in Dortmund served as the backdrop for the “Kruppwerke” .

Audience participation

'Movie - the art of entertainment GmbH', a subsidiary of Constantin Film AG , achieved the following ratings with the three-part series : 7.35 million viewers for Part 1, which corresponded to a market share of 19.7 percent of the total audience; the second and third parts saw 6.6 and 6.45 million viewers (19.4 and 20.2 percent, respectively). The production budget was 11.4 million euros.

Reviews

"In this way, the tenacious and sometimes awkward ZDF three-part series 'Krupp - a German family' interpreted the history of the steel giant as a psychosexual compensation program. Economic history at women's magazine level. "
