Kurt Versock
Kurt Arnold Johannes Versock (born February 14, 1895 in Hütten , † March 17, 1963 in Aachen ) was a German officer , most recently a general of the mountain troops during the Second World War .
Life
education
Versock studied law and economics in Leipzig from the winter semester 1913/14 . There he became active in the Arminia fraternity . Versock later studied another semester in Freiburg im Breisgau .
First World War
In October 1914, Versock joined the 13th Royal Saxon Infantry Regiment No. 178 of the Saxon Army as a flag junior . Here he was promoted to lieutenant in May 1915 . Versock fought as platoon leader , battalion adjutant, MGK company commander and regimental adjutant mainly on the western front .
Weimar Republic
After the First World War , Versock belonged to the Grenzjäger Regiment 1 and on January 1, 1921 was assigned as platoon leader of the 4th (MG) company of the 10th (Saxon) Infantry Regiment . After successfully completing his assistant command training , he became company commander , first in the 16th company and then in the 4th (MG) company of his regiment. From 1934 to 1938 he was employed as a tactics teacher at the Dresden Infantry School and was promoted to major in April 1935 and to lieutenant colonel in January 1938 . On November 1, 1938, Versock became the commander of the 1st Battalion of the 138 Mountain Infantry Regiment .
Second World War
After the invasion of Poland , Versock was commander of the officers' courses from March to October 1940. On November 1, 1940, he was promoted to colonel and appointed commander of the 31st Infantry Regiment. Versock led the regiment in the fighting in the Ukraine and on the Crimean peninsula . For the services of the regiment and for his personal commitment in the conquest of the Sevastopol fortress , he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on August 25, 1942 .
On March 1, 1943, Versock was commissioned to represent the Leningrad Front with the command of the 24th Infantry Division . In May 1943 he was promoted to major general and appointed commander of the 24th Infantry Division. On November 1, 1943, he was promoted to lieutenant general .
On February 18, 1944, Versock was seriously wounded by a machine gun bullet and sent to a hospital. But he was able to return to his division in June. On September 3, 1944 Versock was with the leadership of the XXXXIII. Army Corps commissioned and entrusted with the organization of the coastal defense of Northern Courland. On November 1, 1944 he was promoted to general of the mountain troops. At the end of the war, Versock was taken prisoner by the US .
