Kurtis Wenzel (born February 1, 1991 in Calgary ) is a former Canadian biathlete and cross-country skier .

Kurtis Wenzel started for the Rocky Mountain Racers . He was already skiing at the age of nine, and two years later he competed in his first races. He contested his first biathlon race in Martell as part of the 2007 Biathlon Junior World Championships . In South Tyrol he reached positions 66 in the individual, 62 in the sprint - which meant he missed the chase by two places - and was eighth in the relay competition with Scott Gow and Stuart Lodge . A year later , Wenzel was 25th of the sprint in Ruhpolding , 35th in pursuit and individual and ninth with Gow and Joel Pacas in the relay. In the further course of the year he won the silver medal in the roller ski singles behind Leif Nordgren and in front of Wynn Roberts at the North American Championships in the summer biathlon 2008 in Canmore . In 2009 he was able to achieve his best international results at the Junior World Championships - again in his native Canmore. In the individual he missed the medal ranks as fifth. In the sprint he won the title ahead of Erlend Bjøntegaard and Mario Dolder , in the pursuit he won the bronze medal behind Bjøntegård and Ludwig Ehrhart . In the relay race, he won the title of runner- up at the side of Aaron Gillmor and Gow. At the North American Championships of the year in Valcartier , he won the junior mixed relay title alongside Tana Chesham and Gow. Also in 2010 he started again in Torsby at the Junior World Championships, where he was disqualified 17th in the individual and in the sprint.

In the 2011/12 season Wenzel made his debut in the Biathlon NorAm Cup . In his second race in Canmore he was able to achieve his first podium finish in a pursuit behind Nathan Smith in second place. He made his World Cup debut in 2013 in Sochi , Russia , when he reached 15th place in the Canadian relay. At the end of the 2012/13 season and a week after winning the Canadian Championships , he announced his retirement from biathlon.

In cross-country skiing, Wenzel has been taking part in international races of the cross-country skiing Nor-Am Cup since 2008 . In December 2011 he achieved his first top ten result in the race of the Black Jack Ski Club with ninth place in a freestyle sprint. In the youth field he was three times youth champion, in 2008 in the sprint and in 2009 over 15 kilometers junior champion and in 2011 runner-up in the juniors. At the Canada Winter Games in 2011, Wenzel finished seventh and eighth.

In 2009, Wenzel was Canadian Biathlete of the Year .
