The biathlon NorAm Cup 2011/12 will be just as it did previously as an indirect base for the seasons Biathlon World Cup hosts.
The competitions of the NorAm-Cup are organized depending on the venue by the national associations of Canada and the USA as well as by the local organizing clubs. In addition, the International Biathlon Union (IBU) acts as a partner, making the competitions official competitions of the world association. For the most part, the racing series is only used by Canadian and US biathletes. Unlike in the World Cup and the IBU Cup , the starting fields are not very large, especially for women. In many cases, individual athletes only run individual races, partly because athletes have recommended themselves for races in Europe and then start there, or because not all top athletes were always sent to the individual competitions. The US squad is primarily made up of athletes from the United States Army Reserve and the United States National Guard , while Canadian athletes are primarily drawn from the country's national squad. In the races in the USA mostly US athletes compete, in the races in Canadians participants from Canada predominate. Starting fields of a similar size are only sent out for races in the nearer border region. Under the Nor-Am-Cup races are organized on a regional level in Canada, in the USA mostly within or between the military units, in Canada also as racing series. Apart from the top athletes, who are often part of the country's national squad, the US athletes can rarely prevail in the North American top against the representatives of Canada. While the Canadians' roster is only partially changed over a long period of time, fluctuation in the US roster is quite high.
In the races of the season in 2011 the Canadian Nathan Smith dominated the men with two wins at the start of the season and Wynn Roberts , who finished on the podium in three of the first four races and won one race. The middle third was dominated by the Canadian Marc-André Bédard , who won four races in a row. Even David Grégoire and Vincent Blais regularly placed on the podium, so that in the race in January and February except Michael Gibson with two third ranks in Fort Kent were only on the podium. Only at the season finale in Lake Placid did the Americans dominate again, including two wins for Michael Gibson. The overall standings were won by Vincent Blais, who, in addition to two victories in Valcartier, also achieved two second and two third places.
For women, the 2011 races were even. Only in the second third of the season could the Canadian Claude Godbout , who achieved five wins in a row, take on a dominant role. Including the first third of the season, the American Katrina Howe also achieved four podium finishes. It was not until the season finale that Americans were able to play the dominant role again in Lake Placid in the form of Corrine Malcolm with two wins and Hannah Dreissigacker with two second places, as at the beginning of the season. Claude Godbout then won the overall standings ahead of Katrina Howe.
With the Brazilian Jaqueline Mourão , who lives in Canada , only one runner took part in the competitions who is not eligible to compete in the Canadian or US national team.
