Kvadrat is a documentary from the year 2013, the daily life of a Techno - DJs shows.

The role model for the protagonist is the Russian DJ Andrey Pushkarev. The film is conceived as a mixture of road movie and music video . The documentary not only illuminates the atmosphere in the night clubs , but also gives a look behind the scenes of a life as a DJ. The film documents a journey from Switzerland via France, Hungary, Romania to Russia. In Kvadrat there are no interviews , no explanatory voice-overs , no data, no numbers. The narrative aspect is reduced to the visual and the musical background. The aim is to offer the viewer the greatest possible freedom in interpreting what is happening on the screen and not to impair him with "disturbing" elements, as in usual documentaries.

The film focuses on haunting snapshots, which are intensified by the background music. The director tries to stage the film away from the traditional dramatic structures.

In addition to the general facade of DJ work in night clubs, Kvadrat addresses topics such as: DJ tour , fatigue , sleep deprivation , self-destruction , absurdity, loneliness, the purpose of art and stereotypes of the artist.

action

DJ Andrey Pushkarev wakes up in his apartment in Moscow , packs his records in his suitcase and makes his way to Domodedovo Airport to fly to Zurich . Upon arrival, he is greeted by the supermarket club promoter. After a short sleep in his hotel room, he is woken up by his alarm clock in the middle of the night, packs up his things and sets off for his performance. After the gig , he gets on the train to Geneva and falls asleep again. After a brief visit to a friend in Geneva, he takes a flight back to Moscow.

This “storyline” is the first loop of the film, which Pushkarev repeats over and over again in the following film, with minor deviations.

When he arrives at his apartment in Moscow, he first processes his booking inquiries before selecting the records for his next gig from his stock of vinyl . He takes a taxi to the Leningrad train station and gets on the train to Saint Petersburg . Once there, he listens to new tracks on Beatport . In the evening he is driven to the Barakobamabar, where his next performance is due. At dawn he and a friend take the metro to the train station.

Back in Moscow - and back to a new action "Loop" - he sits together with friends and talks about his dream, only during the day "hang up" and move the techno clubs industry to the people by a health-promoting situation to to steer.

After a short trip on the metro , he hangs up at Club Mir and then flies back to Geneva . From Geneva he takes the train to Olten via Bern , where the promoter receives him and drives him to Club Terminus. There are technical problems there: The Technics SL-1210 turntables do not want to downshift from 45 to 33 rpm. In addition, a technician from the club later brushes the tone arm with his hand . Andrey tiredly takes a taxi to his hotel, where he processes further booking requests on the computer.

The following morning he takes the train to Lausanne and changes to a TGV to Paris. After a performance at Club 4 Éléments he travels to SWISS - hub in Zurich where he was to fly to Budapest dates.

The club crew takes him from Budapest to Kecel , where he plays in front of a large crowd at Club Korona. On the way back to Budapest he falls asleep in the car and misses the skyline of the capital. Once at the hotel, he once again only has a limited number of free hours before he drives back to the airport, which ends another “loop”.

When he arrived in Zurich, he booked a flight to Bucharest . Once there, he is driven to Craiova to hang up at Club Krypton without sleep or a break. The next day he missed the return trip because of one of the heaviest snowstorms in Romania . He arrives at Cluj-Napoca's club called Midi, hangs up for an ecstatic crowd, and then finds himself back in the car on the way back.

At the end you can see Andrey on the beach, where he looks after the waves and after a short time leaves the picture. His suitcase with the plates remains in the picture last.

Production and project development

Due to the limited budget, Anatoly Ivanov acted as a writer, co-producer, director, cameraman, editor and sound engineer. Ivanov and Yury Rysev jointly funded the project. All those involved worked without a fee, so that despite the low budget of 100,000 euros, it was possible to film in five countries.

genre

Ivanov combined the genres road movie and music video and created a techno musical with only a few dialogues. He adapted the aesthetics of fictional and non-fictional film material and removed the clichés of a documentary in order to have the opportunity to make his own type of film. What is shown should speak for itself and evoke emotions, and the viewer should also be animated to question what is happening for themselves.

publication

The film was quietly released on Vimeo on October 17, 2013 in 720p resolution . It includes subtitles in English, French and Russian. So far it has been played 53,000 times there ("plays", not "loads"). The cinema premiere took place during the “Come Together” festival on April 18, 2014 in Rostock . There it was shown in a 2K DCP resolution.

reception

The public and the press were surprised at such a debut without an advertising campaign.

The audience praised the aesthetic, atmospheric, realistic and musical attributes of the film, its realistic nature, the decision to forego traditional interviews and the innovative editing.
