history

The La Rochelle was built at the Reiherstieg shipyard under the direction of Joachim Eduard von Somm and was launched there in 1855 with hull number 11. The owner was the trading house Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & son of the Hamburg businessman Johan Cesar Godeffroy . The ship was named after La Rochelle , where the Godeffroy family came from.

The ship brought emigrants from Hamburg to Australia and South Africa .

From autumn 1856 to January 1857 the La Rochelle sailed from Hamburg to Melbourne. The geophysicist Georg Neumayer was also on board . He was interested in building a geophysical observatory in Melbourne. For this he had secured the support of the Bavarian King Maximilian II of Bavaria , the Hamburg Senate and the gentlemen of Johan Cesar Godeffroy & Son. The latter enabled him and his luggage to pass freely.

Neumayer kept a detailed log book on the trip to Melbourne , Captain Meyer on the return trip to Hamburg. They made precise records based on templates from MF Maury .

During this trip Neumayer believed to have discovered a group of islands between the Cape of Good Hope and Australia and named them "King Max Islands" after his federation King Maximilian II of Bavaria. In fact, the “McDonald Islands” had been discovered a few years earlier. August Petermann wrote a detailed article on this in the Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen in 1858 .

The natural scientist Amalie Dietrich traveled by ship from Hamburg to Brisbane for a research stay in 1863 .

In 1881 La Rochelle was sold to Bauck in Helsingborg . The ship was renamed Saturnus . On a voyage from Sapelo Island in 1886, the ship encountered stormy weather in the Gulf Stream . The Saturnus leaked and lost the rudder. The captain decided to abandon the ship on March 13, 1886, the crew was rescued.
