The Lahn-Camino ( Spanish camino , way ' ) is a section in the network of the ways of the pilgrims in Germany. It leads from Wetzlar mostly on the heights of the Lahn valley to the St. Jakobus hospital chapel in Oberlahnstein . From there you can continue your pilgrimage on the Rhine Camino to Kaub or via Koblenz-Stolzenfels on the Moselle Camino to Trier or the St. James Way on the left bank of the Rhine to Bingen am Rhein .

history

The route is historically not proven beyond doubt, but based on some evidence, a medieval Jacob's route could have led through the Lahn valley. Pilgrims primarily orientated themselves on army and trade routes or rivers. Churches, monasteries, hostels and hospitals were built along these paths. For example, a fragment of a scallop shell was found during excavations in the Protestant church of St. Kastor in Dausenau . All that remains of the former hospital in Oberlahnstein is the St. Jakobus chapel, in which a medieval grave of a pilgrim of St. James was found during renovation work (1985–1989). Villmar pilgrims to the apostles' graves in Santiago and Trier ( St. Matthias ) are mentioned in 1491 on the occasion of the establishment of a brotherhood of James, Matthias and Sebastian (dissolved in the 17th century). From the meeting point in Lahnstein , the pilgrims could reach destinations such as Cologne , Aachen or Trier and had access to the Way of St. James through France to Santiago de Compostela .

course

The Lahn-Camino was first marked in 2001 over a length of around 146 km between Wetzlar and Oberlahnstein by the Taunus Club with numerous signs and stickers with the stylized yellow scallop shell on a blue background. The converging ribs of the shell show the direction as an arrow. The Middle Rhine regional group of the St. Jakobus-Gesellschaft Rheinland-Pfalz-Saarland e. V. assumed responsibility for the maintenance of the marking.
