The Mosel-Camino ( camino: Spanish = way ) is a section in the network of the ways of St. James pilgrims in Germany. It leads from Koblenz-Stolzenfels on both sides of the Moselle to the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier . From there you can continue your pilgrimage via Schengen to Vézelay , the starting point of the Via Lemovicensis .
history
The Moselle Camino has been completely marked as part of the Jakobus pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela from Stolzenfels to Trier since 2008 . With regard to his route, he is independent of direct communal, church or other influence. It is sponsored by the St. Jakobusbruderschaft Trier , has been discussed with the communities concerned and has been approved by the Rhineland-Palatinate North Structure and Approval Directorate in Koblenz, which is responsible for hiking and pilgrimage routes .
For Jacob pilgrims, in connection with the ecumenical pilgrimage route, the Elisabeth path and the Lahn-Camino on the Görlitz-Eisenach-Marburg-Lahnstein axis on both sides of the Moselle and its adjacent heights, the opportunity has been created in an east-west direction to Trier to the tomb of the apostle Matthias and from there on to Santiago de Compostela.
course
The Mosel-Camino was realized on a private initiative and marked over a length of around 160 km between Stolzenfels and Trier with a number of signs and stickers with the yellow scallop shell on a blue background and yellow arrows. The converging ribs of the shell show the direction as an arrow.
The (opposite) course of the Moselle roughly indicates the south-westerly direction into the diocese town. In order to avoid the meander typical of the Moselle, the path also leads to the heights of the Eifel and Hunsrück . Some medieval castles and ruins, time-honored (monastery) churches and chapels, as well as traditional pilgrimage sites and wine villages are close by.
At the beginning of the Camino in Stolzenfels there is a short joint passage with the Jakobsweg on the left bank of the Rhine . In Klausen the Mosel-Camino meets the Eifel-Camino (from Andernach-Namedy ) and in Biewer the Via Colonensis joins it coming from Cologne . All three Way of St. James lead the pilgrims to their common goal in Trier.

James traces
In the course of the Mosel-Camino there are some historical, but mostly modern traces of St. James. Every year in July there is a Jakobusfest in Traben-Trarbach, in which what used to be a large pilgrimage meeting with a supporting program was integrated.

There are currently three pilgrimage hostels along the Mosel-Camino: the Klickerterhof above Treis-Karden, the old Latin school in Traben-Trarbach and the Eberhardsklause in Klausen.
Species protection
On numerous sections of the European Way of St. James, a start has already been made to combine path markings with species protection in order to maintain a broad biodiversity (species diversity). Numerous nesting boxes for birds and bats as well as insect hotels with yellow arrows and scallop symbols have also been hung up and set up on the Moselle Camino .
