State roads in Saarland

Excerpt from the "road map of the Saarland". The red lines are municipal boundaries

In the Saarland , besides the federal autobahns and federal highways , whose construction load is on the federal side , there are only state roads , but no district roads . The district or the municipality is responsible for the so-called municipal roads. The State Office for Road Construction of the Saarland is responsible for state roads of the 1st order (L 101 - L 178) , for the state roads of the 2nd order (L 201 - L 386) the respective district . The length of the Saarland state roads is almost 1,350 km today. In 2002, 821 km of this were 1st order, 606 km 2nd order. A total of around 2000 km of roads are managed, including around 240 km of motorways and 320 km of federal highways .

The so-called forest roads are also maintained by the road construction authorities . These are not to be confused with forest or forest because of. They are mostly very short sections of the road that only have a connection to another classified road at one of their two ends, and mostly to a local road on the other side (e.g. F 445 between Urexweiler and Remmesweiler , district of St . Wendel or as you can see in the map on the right, the F 451 at wayside shrine).

The legal basis can be found in the Saarland State Road Act. The maintenance of the roads is shared by seven road maintenance services based in Dillingen , Limbach , Merzig , Sulzbach / Saar , Rohrbach , St. Wendel and Theeltal with locations in Sotzweiler and Lebach . The boundaries of the road maintenance depots are not based on political boundaries, they mostly cut up places and mostly cross roads at their junctions.

Station direction

The direction of each street is clearly defined. This is usually the direction in which the kilometers are counted up. For details see under network nodes .

The roads are numbered from south-east to north-west, ie the smallest state road numbers are in the municipality of Gersheim and Mandelbachtal , the largest between the Saar and the Moselle (e.g. in Orscholz ). This applies to both 1st and 2nd order streets. The stationing direction is usually also from south to north or from east to west. Otherwise, the following applies: The station is always from the more important to the less important street. If state roads end in a place without connection to other state or federal roads, the stationing direction also runs into the place. If a state road ends at the state border, the stationing ends there.

Forest roads

Forest roads often lead to the border with France or Rhineland-Palatinate (e.g. F458 between Ottweiler -Lautenbach and Waldmohr ). These streets then have no network nodes and no stationing direction ( see under stationing direction ) . A logical sequence is not recognizable when assigning the forest road numbers. In contrast to the state roads, forest roads do not cross the district boundaries. The Saarpfalz district is the only district that has no forest roads. The forest roads are generally numbered with three digits in the 400 range.

These differences to country roads or municipal roads are not apparent on forest roads. They may have been poorly developed and are narrow, but these roads are normally open to traffic (at least for cars ).
