The Lares district is located in the Calca province in the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. It has an area of ​​732 km². In the 2017 census, 6571 inhabitants were counted. In 1993 the population was 7,483, in 2007 7,138. The district administration is located in the 3171  m high village of Lares with 907 inhabitants (as of 2017). Lares is located 26 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Calca .

Geographical location

The Lares district is located in the Andes in the center of the Calca province. The rivers Río Lares and Río Amparaes, the headwaters of the Río Yanatile , cross the district in a north-north-west and north-west direction.

The Lares district borders in the southeast on the Calca district , in the southwest on the Urubamba and Ollantaytambo districts (both in the Urubamba province ), in the west on the Ocobamba district ( La Convención province ), in the north on the Yanatile district and in the east on the Challabamba District ( Paucartambo Province ).
