The Lauter is the 27.9 km long, left and western source river of the Schlitz in the Vogelsbergkreis and district of Fulda in Hesse , Germany , which merges in Bad Salzschlirf with the right and southern source river Altefeld . The catchment area of the Lauter covers 136.58 km².

course

The Lauter rises in the Vogelsberg low mountain range around 2 km north-northeast of the Sieben Ahorn mountain ( 752.7  m above sea  level ), which is part of the Oberwald there . Its source lies within the Vogelsberg district in the Hoher Vogelsberg nature park on the wooded forest meadow head at an altitude of about 670  m .

The flowing water mostly runs in a north-easterly direction. After leaving the forest area at the source of the river, the Lauter flows through Engelrod , Hörgenau and Hopfmannsfeld , three municipal parts of the Lautertal valley named after it . After flowing through another forest and leaving the nature park, the Lauter runs through Frischborn , whereupon the Eisenbach flows in from the south . Then it moves north through Lauterbach , also named after it, where the Brenderwasser flows in from the west . Still in the village, the Lauter bends to the east and then flows through the village of Angersbach .

A little further east, the Lauter reaches Bad Salzschlirf , located in the Fulda district , where it is 238.7  m above sea level. NN combined with the Altefeld coming from the south to form the now 13.3 km long, left-hand Fulda tributary Schlitz .
