geography

location

The seven maple rises in the upper forest of the Vogelsberg in the nature park Hoher Vogelsberg . While most of it and the summit region lie in the urban areas of Ulrichstein and Schotten , its eastern slope falls into the urban area of Herbstein and the northeast slope in the municipality of Lautertal . Its summit is located 3.6 km southeast of the Ulrichstein district of Feldkrücken , 3.9 km south of the Ulrichstein district of Rebgeshain , 3.6 km north-northeast of the Schotten district of Breungeshain , 5.1 km west-southwest of the Herbstein district of Lanzenhain and 5.1 km southwest of the Lautertal part of the municipality Eichelhain .

On the eastern slope of the Sieben Ahorn lies the Geiselstein , a rock opening made of nepheline - leucite - basalt with a high content of magnetic iron at about 720  m height . 2.2 km south-south-east of the mountain peak is the Taufstein ( 773  m ), the highest mountain in the Vogelsberg and 2.8 km south with the Hoherodskopf ( 763.8  m ), the second highest mountain in this low mountain range.

Natural allocation

The seven maple tree belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35) and in the main unit Hoher Vogelsberg (351) to the subunit Oberwald (351.2). The landscape leads west to northwest into the subunit Western High Vogelsberg (351.0) and to the northeast into the subunit Eastern High Vogelsberg (351.1).

Mountain height

The seven maple is about 753  m high , according to the uppermost contour line visible on topographic maps . Its summit is in the area around Feldkrücken. On the summit region there is a forest path crossing at an altitude of 752.7  m , which is shown on such maps on the southern edge of the ring of the top contour line.

Flowing waters

The Rhine-Weser watershed and the Main - Lahn watershed run across the wooded summit region of the Sieben Ahorn . Gilgbach and Streitbach , source brooks of the Ilsbach , the main hydrological arm of the Ohm , whose water reaches the Rhine through the Lahn, arise at its northwestern foothills . In a counter-clockwise direction, the Graswiesenbach joins on the western slope and its receiving water Nidda on the southern slope , the water of which flows through the Main to the Rhine. In the transition area from Sieben Ahorn to Taufstein rises the Alte Hasel (Ellersbach) , in the north the Eisenbach and, even further north, its receiving water Lauter ; the water of these brooks reaches the Weser through the Schlitz and Fulda .

Protected areas

Parts of the bird sanctuary Vogelsberg (VSG no. 5421-401; 636.4497  km² ) are located on the Sieben Ahorn . On the eastern slope is the nature reserve (NSG) In the Breungeshainer Heide ( CDDA no. 81991; designated 1983; 64.37  ha ), to which the NSG Oberes Niddatal / Troutenteiche (CDDA no. 164885; 1990; 1 , 3079 km²). Areas of the multi-part fauna-flora-habitat area Hoher Vogelsberg (FFH no. 5421-302; 38.6136 km²) extend to the summit region of the mountain and, up to the north and northeast slopes, those of the FFH area Lauter and Eisenbach ( FFH No. 5322-306; 1.7062 km²).

Traffic and walking

From the direction of Feldkrücken, Landesstraße  3291 leads over the southwestern highlands of the Sieben Ahorn , which in the south meets the L 3338, which runs southwest to Breungeshain, and the L 3305. The latter leads between the baptismal font and the Hoherodskopf and then eastwards to Hochwaldhausen . Hessenweg 2 runs over the mountain in sections along the L 3291 .
