The Lay (in the upper reaches: Grand Lay ) is a coastal river in France that runs in the Vendée department , in the Pays de la Loire region . It rises in the municipality of Saint-Pierre-du-Chemin under the name Grand Lay , drains generally in a south-westerly direction and takes on the Petit Lay tributary in the village of L'Assemblée des Deux Lay (municipality of La Réorthe ) . From here on it will only be referred to by the name Lay . It passes the landscape of the Marais Poitevin and flows into the Atlantic after 120 kilometers at L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer .
