Le Poizat is a former French commune with the last 450 inhabitants (2013) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belonged to the Arrondissement Nantua and eponymous canton Nantua .

It was merged with the former municipality of Lalleyriat with effect from January 1, 2016 and merged to form the Commune nouvelle Le Poizat-Lalleyriat .

geography

Le Poizat is located at 890  m , about eleven kilometers west-northwest of the town of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine and 37 km east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Haut- Bugey , in the Jura , on a north-sloping slope below the ridge of the Grande Montagne, south of the deeply cut Cluse de Nantua , a transverse valley through the Jura chains.

In addition to the actual village, Le Poizat also included various hamlets, groups of farms and individual farms, namely:

  • Le Replat ( 850  m ) west of the Combet valley at the foot of the Forêt de Moment
  • Le Sougey ( 880  m ) on the plateau south of the Cluse de Nantua
  • Les Granges-du-Poizat ( 920  m ) on the plateau south of the Cluse de Nantua

Neighboring towns of Le Poizat are Charix in the north, Lalleyriat in the east, Le Grand-Abergement in the south and Les Neyrolles in the west.

history

Le Poizat is first mentioned in the 12th century as the property of the Nantua monastery. In the 13th century, the village passed to the rule of the Thoire-Villars and came with this 1402 under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , Le Poizat came to France in 1601. In 1827 the village was separated from Lalleyriat and raised to the status of an independent municipality.

After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (606 people were still counted in 1891), the population has increased again since the beginning of the 1980s. The local residents of Le Poizat are called in French Poizatiers or Poizatières .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Le Poizat was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , especially cattle and dairy farming, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

In winter, Le Poizat benefits from tourism when cross- country skiing trails are groomed on the plateaus in the area . The slope above the village is accessed by a ski lift. In summer the landscape around Le Poizat is a popular recreational area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Germain-de-Joux to Le Grand-Abergement. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around ten kilometers away.

In Le Poizat there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
