Lalleyriat is a former French commune with the last 261 inhabitants (2013) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Nantua and the canton of Nantua of the same name . The local residents of Lalleyriat are called Lalleyriatiers or Lalleyriatières in French .
It was merged with the former municipality of Le Poizat with effect from January 1, 2016 and merged to form the Commune nouvelle Le Poizat-Lalleyriat .
geography
Lalleyriat is located at 825 m , about ten kilometers northwest of the city of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine and 38 km east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The farming village extends in the Haut- Bugey , in the Jura , on a leveled area at the northern foot of the Grande Montagne , south of the deeply cut Cluse de Nantua , a transverse valley through the Jura chains.
Lalleyriat included the hamlet of Le Burlandier ( 540 m ) on Combet in the Cluse de Nantua as well as some individual farms. Neighboring towns of Lalleyriat are Charix and Saint-Germain-de-Joux in the north, Châtillon-en-Michaille in the east, Le Grand-Abergement in the south and Le Poizat in the west.
history
Lalleyriat is first mentioned in the 12th century as the property of the Nantua monastery. In the 13th century, the village passed to the rule of the Thoire-Villars and came with this 1402 under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , Lalleyriat came to France in 1601. The area changed in 1827, when the village of Le Poizat was separated from Lalleyriat and made an independent municipality.

The Saint-Blaise village church of Lalleyriat was built in 1840.

After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (420 people were still counted in 1886), the population has increased again since the early 1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Lalleyriat was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , especially cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a sawmill. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
In winter Lalleyriat benefits from tourism when cross- country ski trails are groomed on the plateaus in the area . In summer the landscape around Lalleyriat is a popular recreational area.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Germain-de-Joux to Le Grand-Abergement. Another road connection exists with Charix. The nearest connection to the A40 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is around eight kilometers away.
