Legacies is an American television series created by Julie Plec and first broadcast on October 25, 2018 on The CW . It is an offshoot of The Originals , which is itself an offshoot of the Vampire Diaries , and contains characters from both series.

The focus of Legacies is Hope Mikaelson, the daughter of Klaus Mikaelson and Hayley Marshall, who descends from the most powerful vampires, werewolves and witches. The show starts two years after The Originals ended. 17 year old Hope attends the Salvatore Boarding School for Supernatural Beings. The school offers refuge for supernatural beings where they learn to use their abilities.

In August 2017 it was announced that there were talks with Julie Plec about an offshoot of The Originals , which is supposed to be about Hope Mikaelson. In January 2018 a pilot episode was ordered, the script of which was written by Julie Plec. In March 2018 it was announced that instead of a proper pilot episode, a 15-minute presentation would be broadcast on The CW . It was also announced that Matthew Davis would take up his role from Vampire Diaries again. Also Danielle Rose Russell was confirmed for her role as Hope Mika Elson. Furthermore, were Quincy Fouse , Jenny Boyd , Kaylee Bryant and Aria Shahghasemi confirmed for the series.
In May, CW gave the project the green light to produce a 13-part first season. At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018, it was announced that Paul Wesley would be directing an episode and that Zach Roerig and Steven R. McQueen would be returning to guest appearances. In November 2018, CW ordered three more episodes, bringing the first season to a total of 16 episodes. In January 2019, the series was ordered for a second season with twenty episodes, but due to the production stop due to the COVID-19 pandemic , this season had to end after sixteen episodes. In January 2020, The CW extended the series by a third season, the broadcast of which in the USA - also due to the pandemic - will not start until January 2021.

Johanna throne of Serienjunkies.de place Legacies is, "even though it tried to make a good entry point into the TVD to give universe", "highly recommended for fans of the previous program." It goes on to say that “even lovers of The Originals ” “don't really get their money's worth” in this pilot episode, as “there is hardly a plot” and “most of the characters remain pretty flat”.
