The Lethe is a 36.5 km long left tributary of the Hunte in north-western Lower Saxony . The name Lethe originated from Lith, a local name for high, wooded river bank.

course

The Lethe rises at two points in the moor near Halen (municipality of Emstek ) and then flows through Gut Lethe past Lethe Baggersee northwards through the municipalities of Garrel , Großenkneten and Wardenburg to Oldenburg . It was created in the post-ice age, supplies the Ahlhorn fish ponds with water and flows into the Hunte after 36.5 km near Oldenburg, via the Easter burger Canal . The Lethe is dammed east of the Baumweg primeval forest. Below the Lethe dam, it has maintained its natural course as far as Charlottendorf West , in parts lined with overgrown dunes and sandy banks. Most of these banks are located within the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area 012 ("Sager Meer, Ahlhorner Fischteiche, Lethetal") of the European Union .

A special feature of the Lethe is that it crosses the Hunte at Hundsmühlen : its water is led through culverts under the Hunte ( Lage ), which, due to water regulation measures, has a higher water level than the Lethe and whose course was artificially relocated to the north. So it happens that the Lethe, although its catchment area is on the left of the Hunte, flows orographically from the right into the Hunte via the Easterburg Canal .

Water quality

As part of the “hunte 25” project, the quality of the Lethe water between Gut Lethe and Bissel was examined. A strong ocher formation of the water below the Lethetalsperre was found. The study predicts that due to intensive farming in the upper reaches of the Lethe, the nitrate concentration will significantly exceed the limit values set in today's drinking water ordinance. The authors recommend reducing nitrogen inputs in the upper reaches of the Lethe.

In November 2008, the “Biological Protection Association Hunte Weser-Ems” applied for the catchment area of the Lethe in its source area to be placed under nature protection in order to protect the Ahlhorn fish ponds. The district of Cloppenburg as the lower nature conservation authority rejected the application.

Historical meaning

From 1400 to 1803 the upper reaches of the Lethe formed the border between the Niederstift Münster and the county or duchy of Oldenburg . Where the Flemish Road crossed the border river, Lethe Castle was built in the 15th century as the center of the estate of the same name. For a long time the manor was on the left bank. After 1756 it was replaced by a new building to the right of the Lethe, which today houses the service building of the motorway police.

Since the Reformation , the Lethe has also been a denominational boundary in its upper reaches : Even today, around 80 percent of the population in the Oldenburger Münsterland are Catholic, in the remaining parts of the former state of Oldenburg, however, less than 20 percent.
