The nature reserve northwest of Greetsiel includes the entire headland with the Leyhörn reservoir, the Leyhörner Sieltief and the Leysiel , as well as the ponds at Hauen. The latter were created on an area of around 65 hectares of previously agriculturally used area by removing clay for the construction of dykes and then designed to be natural. The nature reserve borders directly on the quiet zone (Zone I) of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park to the east of Leysiel . To the west of the Leysiel, the dike is excluded from the nature reserve. However, certain protective regulations apply to him.
The area of the nature reserve was created after the mid-1980s through dike measures, after the entire Leybucht was to be diked in order to protect the coast from the mid-1960s in view of the flood disasters in the Netherlands and Hamburg and the dike line was to be shortened significantly.
In the reserve next to the water and found silt surfaces extensive reedbeds , Hochstaudenfluren and grassland areas. There are also extensive reed beds on the ponds near Hauen.
The nature reserve is of international importance as a breeding and resting area for birds. For example barnacle geese and brent geese rest here . The Leyhörn is u. a. Habitat for oystercatchers , spoonbills and avocets .
At the edge of the protected area there is a bird observation hut and an information vehicle from the Naturschutzbund Deutschland . The observation hut is barrier-free. Guided tours of the nature reserve, which otherwise may not be entered, are offered from the information vehicle. From the Greetsiel harbor, cutter trips to the nature reserve are offered. The remoteness of Leysiel has been used since 2000 by the state association of beekeepers Weser-Ems and the state association Buckfastimker Bayern for the controlled mating of queen bees.
