Church of Our Lady

The Church of Our Lady is a Roman Catholic church in Oberursel (Taunus) and Maria consecrated. It stands as a cultural monument under monument protection . The parish belongs to the pastoral area Oberursel / Steinbach , the church district Hochtaunus and the diocese of Limburg .

location

The church is located on a 17,000 square meter property between Berliner Strasse and Herzbergstrasse in a residential area .

history

In the course of the economic miracle , the population of Oberursel grew rapidly. Therefore, in 1954, the church council applied for the construction of a new church to be considered. With regard to a - ultimately not realized - planned large new building area in the neighborhood, the church was designed very generously. Planning began in 1961. The architect was Rudolf Schwarz , who died in the fall of 1961 during the planning phase. From then on, his wife, the architect Maria Schwarz , continued the planning.

The foundation stone was laid on May 1, 1963; the first service was celebrated in 1964. In 1965, the parish vicarie of Liebfrauen was founded by decree . In the same year the church was honored as an exemplary achievement by the state of Hesse . Auxiliary Bishop Walter Kampe consecrated the church on May 21, 1967, three years after the first service. After another two years, the Liebfrauen congregation was officially elevated to a parish by a parish vicarie , and the Liebfrauenkirche became a parish church .

Building description

The Liebfrauenkirche is the largest church in Oberursel, although the Liebfrauen congregation with 1,300 members is one of the smallest in Oberursel.

The church is based on the model of the Trier Liebfrauenkirche as a central building and forms a cross with equal arms, with the organ in one arm. Together with the conches , a rose is formed based on the patronage of the church . The church walls consist of exposed brick masonry, the four pillars and the ribbed ceiling are made of concrete . This should symbolize the integration of the church (original building material brick) into the modern world (modern building material concrete) .

Furnishing

Most of the interior was created by the Oberursel artist Georg Hieronymi. In addition to the priest's seats and the statue of the Virgin Mary , he also designed a ten-part way of the cross , which was implemented in ten large-scale tapestries . The tabernacle is surrounded by a gold band and studded with rock crystals , and was designed by Friedrich Gebhart. The font was designed by Rudolf Schwarz. In 2001, the church received a new chalice, which, together with the identical chalice in the St. Catherine Church in Braniewo , Poland , is said to be a symbol of unity and peace , according to the inscription . The windows were designed by Giselbert Hoke in 1967 . The natural motifs are inspired by the singing of the young men in the fiery furnace , writings from the Book of Daniel. The windows should darken the church and give it a calm character.

On the roof there is a golden cross with a halo, consisting of 56 bars, based on a plan by Maria Schwarz.

organ

The organ was built in 1970 by the Klais organ building workshop in Bonn. The slider chest instrument has 52 registers (3814 pipes) on four manuals and pedal . The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric. The organ is one of the most important organs in the Rhine-Main area and one of the largest in the Limburg diocese . Organ concerts take place regularly due to the good acoustics inside the church.

use

After the first service on June 7, 1964, services were held regularly on Sundays. The first pastor of the community was Erich Einig. Due to a lack of priests, a parish association was formed with St. Aureus and Justina ( Bommersheim ) in 1976, and from 1977 also with St. Ursula . The rectory of St. Ursula was chosen as the seat. In 2012 a new parish of St. Ursula was founded, which now includes all parishes in the pastoral area of Oberursel / Steinbach.
