Johannes Klais Orgelbau, Kölnstrasse 148, Bonn

history

The company is in the fourth generation. It was founded in 1882 by Johannes Klais (1852–1925). It was initially located on Breite Straße in Bonn's Nordstadt district , and in 1894 a new residential and business building was built on Kölnstraße based on a design by Gerhard Franz Langenberg , which the company moved into in spring 1896. Since 1925 the company has been run by his son Hans Klais (1890–1965), and since 1965 by his grandson Hans Gerd Klais (* 1930). Today the company is managed by his great-grandson Philipp Klais (* 1967).

New buildings by the Klais organ manufacture generally correspond to the type of universal organ, which seeks to bring together tonal and structural elements of stylistically different organ epochs and landscapes into a new unit within a contemporary concept and also considers new developments to be sensible. Accordingly, the company strives for a design in modern forms for the prospectus, case and play system of its organs.

The restoration of the bamboo organ from the parish church of St. Joseph in Las Piñas in the Philippines, built in 1824, caused a worldwide sensation in 1975 . The dilapidated instrument, which is the only one of its kind, was flown in parts to Bonn and extensively renovated there. The organ manufacturer Klais has also restored many other historic organs.

Hermann Simon mentions the Klais organ manufacturer in his book of the same name as an example of a " hidden champion ".
