history

Bengen was first mentioned in a document in 1289 under the name "Benghoven". The monastery of St. Dionysius (St. Denis) in Liège owned land in Bengen and had the right of patronage for the church. These rights were transferred to Steinfeld Monastery in 1289 .

Until the end of the 18th century, Bengen belonged to the County of Neuenahr , which at times exercised sovereignty itself . In 1794 the French Revolutionary Army occupied the Rhineland , and Bengen was assigned to the Mairie Heimersheim in the canton of Remagen and the Rhine-Moselle department under French administration . After the Congress of Vienna in the area in 1815 came to the Kingdom of Prussia , Bengen was an independent municipality and the newly formed Mayor's Gelsdorf in district Ahrweiler in Koblenz has been assigned. In 1817 Bengen had 272 inhabitants. In 1936 the previous mayor's office in Gelsdorf was renamed to Amt Ringen and from 1968 to 1974 Bengen belonged to the community of Ringen .

In the course of the administrative and territorial reform of Rhineland-Palatinate, the non-association municipality Grafschaft was newly formed with effect from March 16, 1974. The municipal council of Bengen had spoken in favor of incorporation with only two votes, three votes in favor of the continued existence of the association, one vote abstained.
