Lieuwe Visser (born August 23, 1940 in Diemen , North Holland , † March 4, 2014 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch opera singer with a bass-baritone voice .

Life

Visser initially worked as a historian before studying singing with Jan van der Meent in Amsterdam. He completed further studies at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Giorgio Favaretto. In 1966 he took part in the Holland Festival. He made his debut in 1973 as an opera singer at the Dutch Opera Amsterdam as a music teacher Basilio in the opera The Barber of Seville . He sang a wide range of roles at the Nederlandse Opera, including serious and comical roles. His repertoire included roles from Claudio Monteverdi to modern times.

He also took part in several world premieres and premieres of modern opera works, including a. as the painter Basil Hallward in Dorian Gray by Hans Kox (De Nederlandse Opera; 1974), Frankenstein by HK Gruber (Center Français Lyrique Paris; 1983), Doctor Faustus by Konrad Boehmer (De Nederlandse Opera; 1985), in the title role of the Opera Noach by Guus Janssen (1995) and as castellan / bar owner in Esmee by Theo Loevendie (Koninklijk Theater Carré in Amsterdam; May 1995).

In 1973 he appeared together with the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble in a program with songs by Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill ; in it he played the role of Marlene Dietrich . In 1976 he took over the title role in Don Pasquale at the Nederlandse Opera . In June 1979 he sang the role of Betto di Signa in the opera Gianni Schicchi in Scheveningen ; Hans Vonk conducted the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Visser was a guest at the Carinthian Summer in Ossiach in 1980 . In July 1981 he appeared under the conductor Bernard Haitink at the Glyndebourne Festival as Theseus in the Britten opera A Midsummer Night's Dream . In November 1981 he took on the role of the conspirator Count Horn in the opera Un ballo in maschera by Giuseppe Verdi at the Amsterdam City Theater . In November 1982 he sang again the painter Basil Hallward in Dorian Gray by Hans Kox with the Nederlandse Operastichting in Utrecht at a performance in the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht . In February 1983 he interpreted the role of the betrayed husband Don Geronio in the Rossini opera Il turco in Italia at a performance of the Nederlands Opera Stichting in the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam , "vocally quite satisfactory" and with "comic talent" . In 1984 he sang Masetto in the revival of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni in the production of Götz Friedrich at the Dutch Opera in Eindhoven . In September 1985 he took over the role of steward Don Estoban in the opera Der Zwerg at the Nederlandse Operastichting in Amsterdam . In June he sang the role of Hermann Ortel, one of the masters, in a new production of the opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Carré Theater . In the 1986/87 season he sang the role of the servant Pistola in a new production of the Falstaff opera in September 1986 on the occasion of the opening of the Muziektheater Amsterdam .

In 1988 he played the leading role in the children's opera De naam van de maan based on motifs by Annie MG Schmidt (music: Kees Olthuis). In October 1988 he sang Death in the music theater work In Germany by Mauricio Kagel at the Festival of Contemporary Music “Musica 88” in Strasbourg . In December 1989 he took part in a performance of the opera L'enfant et les sortilèges , under the musical direction of Charles Dutoit , together with the Concertgebouw Orchestra ; he sang the roles of armchair and tree ( Le fauteuil , L'arbre ). In the 1990/91 season he sang the servant Pistola in Falstaff in Enschede in a production of the Opera-Forum Enschede. In the 1990/91 season he worked at the Dutch Opera in Amsterdam in a new production of the Berlioz opera Benvenuto Cellini . In May 1991 he sang the small role of Astolfo in a concert performance of the opera Lucrezia Borgia for a radio production by Radio VARA in Hilversum at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam . In the 1991/92 season he took on the role of Le Bailli in a new production of the Werther Opera at Opera Zuid (based in Maastricht ) . In the 1993/94 season he sang the role of Marchese d'Obigny in a new production of La Traviata (director: Alfred Kirchner ) in Amsterdam . In 1995 he played together with the cabaret artist Jasperina de Jong in the musical Lang leve de opera! by Ivo de Wijs and Joop Stokkermans.

Visseur was also active as a concert, oratorio and lieder singer. He interpreted as a speaker / singer a. a. Works by Arnold Schönberg . With the pianist Rudolf Jansen as an accompanist, he sang songs by Hugo Wolf in 1976 . For his interpretation of Loevendie's composition De Nachtegaal (for speaker and orchestra) he was awarded the Edison , the Dutch music prize, in 1982. He took u. a. the Goethe songs by Ferruccio Busoni for the record . In the 1980s and 1990s he was considered one of the leading bass players in the Netherlands.

Since 1987/1988 he worked as a singing teacher and lecturer at the Music Conservatory in Maastricht . He was chairman of the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst . When he resigned from this position in June 2005 he was awarded the Amsterdamse Frans Banninck Cocq Medal ( Amsterdamse Frans Banninck Cocq Penning ).

Visser died in March 2014 at the age of 73 at his home in Amsterdam. He was married to the harpsichordist Anneke Uittenbosch , who was a lecturer at the Maastricht and Amsterdam Conservatories. He gave concerts with her and made several recordings.
