Like I Love You ( English for “How I love you”) is a song by the German singer-songwriter Nico Santos , which was created in collaboration with DJ Topic , who is also from Germany . The track is the third single from Santos' second self-titled studio album.

Creation and artwork

Like I Love You was written by the two performers themselves - under their real names "Tobias Topic" (Topic) and "Nico Wellenbrink" (Nico Santos) - together with co-authors Pascal Reinhardt and Joe Walter. The instrumentation, production and programming were carried out through collaboration between Reinhardt and Topic. For the instrumentation, keyboards and drums were used, which both played in. Reinhardt also played the guitar sounds. Topic was responsible for mixing the piece. The mastering took place under the direction of the Berlin sound engineer Lex Barkey .

On the front cover of the single there is only an ice surface to be seen - in addition to the artist name and song title. The label is in yellow, centered, in the middle of the cover image.

The school and I as well as a solo appearance by Santos in the ProSieben show Schlag den Star . In May 2020, the German television station ProSieben advertised the song as an “entertainment tip”, which means that it could be seen in various commercial breaks.

Santos took the lead after the second voting country and held the lead until the twelfth country. After the twelfth country, DeLange took the lead. background information

In Like I Love You this is not the first collaboration between Nico Santos and Topic, in late 2015 the two released the single Home . The single reached position twelve in Germany and the top 10 in Austria . Internationally, the piece also made it into the Australian single charts, where Home just barely missed the top 10 with position eleven. The single sold around 470,000 times, received platinum records in Australia and Germany and represented the breakthrough for the two artists. Santos previously only achieved one of the bottom spots in the Swiss charts as a guest singer with Mr.Da-Nos ( Holding On ) and Topic hit the music charts for the first time.

content

The lyrics to Like I Love You are in English . The title translates into German as “How I love you”. The music and the text were written and composed jointly by Pascal Reinhardt, Tobias Topic (Topic), Joe Walter and Nico Wellenbrink (Nico Santos). Musically, the song moves in the area of dance pop . The tempo is 126 beats per minute . The key is A minor . According to Santos, the song is meant to reflect the fear and imagination of what it would feel like if the past love suddenly had a new one.

The song is based on an intro , two verses, a chorus , a drop and a bridge . The song begins with the intro, which is simply composed of the repetitive line "Like I Love You". The short intro was followed by the first verse, followed by the chorus, which in turn ends with a drop that is largely similar to the intro. The process is repeated with the second stanza. The second chorus is followed by a three-line bridge, before the song ends with the third chorus and the directly following drop. Topic only works as a producer on the piece, the main vocals were completely taken over by Santos. In addition, the voice of co-author Walter can be heard in the background

"He doesn't love you like I love you.
He doesn't need you like I need you now.
He doesn't love you like I love you.
Hope he won't hurt you like I hurt you.

He doesn't know you like I know you.
'Cause baby, I know every part of you.
He doesn't love you like I love you.
Hope he won't hurt you like I hurt you.
Guess I don't deserve you. "

- Refrain, original excerpt

“He doesn't love you like I love you.
He doesn't need you like I need you.
He doesn't love you like I love you.
I hope he won't hurt you the way I did.

He doesn't know you as well as I know you.
Because darling, I don't have any part of you.
He doesn't love you like I love you.
I hope he won't hurt you the way I did.
I guess I don't deserve you. "

- Refrain, translation

Music videos

To Like I Love You Two official music videos were released. First, a poetry video was released that premiered on March 12, 2020 on YouTube . In the foreground, as is typical for poetry videos, it always shows the currently sung song lines in yellow letters. Impressions of a mountain landscape can be seen in the background. The actual music video finally celebrated its premiere on April 2, 2020. It shows a young woman (played by Toni Dreher-Adenuga ) who makes her way to her opponent. She is traveling by motorcycle and makes another stop on her way to make a deal for an unknown substance with a stranger. After the deal, she is followed by two other motorcyclists for a short time. This she shakes off without further ado and later meets the wanted person, who turns out to be her double (played by Valerie Mevegue). She then enters into a fight with herself. The video ends with a mirrored close-up of the injured original. In between, scenes of Santos can be seen again and again, who sings the song in the midst of a small crowd and once caught in a detached prison. Topic only appears briefly in the video, regardless of the story. The total length of the video is 3:48 minutes. As with some of Santos' previous music videos, the director was again Marvin Ströter.

Reviews

Henry Einck from dance-charts.de sees great similarities between Like I Love You and Home , but with different expectations than before, from which the two could not be influenced. The duo deliver a solid dance-pop single that does exactly what the listener expects when reading the names of the artists. Santos could express all his talent when singing and Topic could prove with the "sound design" that he had a feel for modern sound. Whether Like I Love You will develop into a hit is difficult to assess, but the success of Home will most likely not be able to be surpassed.
