Triangulation column
Triangulation column Greifensteinstrasse
(map)
marked 1865 (triangulation stone) Second order station, significant testimony to geodesy of the 19th century, of significance in terms of surveying history.

Monument text: Station 129-Greifenstein was built on the highest rock of the Greifenstein. The municipality of Ehrenfriedersdorf, as the owner, gave its approval to this retrospectively on October 29, 1867 and received compensation of 30 marks for the use. The column stands directly on the rock of the Greifenstein and has a height of approx. 1.0 m. The station is located directly behind the viewing platform that can be reached via stairs.

The column originally pulled by Weiß with a pulley system and towing rails on the rock was removed in 1985 when the viewing platform was renewed. The deed of incorporation was removed. In addition to the certificate, the glass capsule also contained a portrait photo of Weiß as well as a personal assessment of the situation in Saxony and the role of the kingdom in Europe. The column parts were salvaged in 1995 by the Greifenstein area association. After the restoration, the column (without cover plate) was put back in its original location. The capsule and its contents are no longer there.

The natural theater as a main attraction of the recreation area was created through the mining of the Greifenstein granite. Of 13 rocks at the time, six have been removed in the last 200 years.

In the period from 1862 to 1890, a land survey was carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony, in which two triangular networks were formed. On the one hand, there is the network for grade measurement in the Kingdom of Saxony (network I. class / order) with 36 points and the royal Saxon triangulation (network II. Class / order) with 122 points. This national survey was led by Christian August Nagel, according to which the triangulation columns are also referred to as "Nagelsche columns". This surveying system was one of the most modern layer networks in Germany. The surveying columns set for this purpose remained almost entirely in their original locations. They are an impressive testimony to the history of land surveying in Germany and in Saxony. The system of surveying columns of both orders is in its entirety a cultural monument of supraregional importance. (LfD / 2013)
