Old synagogue
Old synagogue Langenstrasse 24
(map)
1853, used until 1911 In the former backyard of the hotel "Weißes Roß" Obermarkt 17, the building was previously a social theater and as such probably superfluous with the city theater from 1850, little preserved interior architecture, neo-Gothic exterior, architectural and local significance. Postal address is Langenstrasse 23. Building similar to a large hall of an inn. Coducchi window. The former main entrance perhaps via the back yard of an Obermarkthaus. Basilical facade, set back from Langenstrasse. Suspended ceiling inside, hardly any equipment. Side staircase with cast iron railing. Original wooden windows with stencil painting.

Info February 2014 Lower Monument Authority: The synagogue would now run under Grüner Graben 26. This is not the case in the geoportal, so it is left as it is.

Before considering the monument value, a brief consideration of the social position of the Jews must be preceded. As is well known, Görlitz was defeated in 1815 at the Congress of Vienna with a large (northern) part of Upper Lusatia to Prussia and Silesia was annexed, so that Prussian laws applied here. This was initially the Prussian Jewish Law, enacted under Friedrich Wilhelm IV. In 1847, which declared Jews to be Prussian citizens with various rights. On this basis, a Jewish community was founded in Görlitz as early as 1847, the cemetery on Biesnitzer Strasse was laid out in 1849, and a synagogue community was founded in 1850. In the “Neue Lausitzische Magazin”, Görlitz 1852, published by the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences, it says on the subject: “No earlier than 1848 they (the Jews) received citizenship in Görlitz again, while in the Saxon Lusatia no one is allowed to live and the Saxon Jews are only allowed to live in Dresden and Leipzig. ”In the book“ Das Markgrafentum Oberlausitz, Königlich-Prussischen Teils ”, edited by Johann Gottlieb Mischke, Görlitz 1861, it is written that in Prussian Oberlausitz otherwise (anyway ) were only Christians, whereas the Jews in Görlitz had their own synagogue.

In that year, 1861, one of these had existed in Görlitz for eight years. Today this building has the address Langenstrasse 24. The house was originally the back building of the Hotel “Weißes Roß”, Obermarkt 17, and as such a social theater. With the construction of the city theater on Demianiplatz in 1850, this social theater became superfluous, so that the synagogue could be brought here in 1853.

If the social theater was to be entered via the back courtyard of Obermarkt 17, the main entrance of the synagogue was relocated to the north, i.e. to the free side facing Langenstrasse. Here was - and still is - a garden between the synagogue and the street that belonged to the municipal school that was opened in 1846 on the corner of Langenstrasse and Breite Strasse.

The conversion of the social theater into a synagogue in 1853 was accompanied by a renovation that left the structure unchanged as a large hall of an inn. Only the facade on the free north side with a view of the garden of the municipal school was given a contemporary, neo-Gothic look. For this purpose, the facade was divided into a base zone and an upper zone by a cornice and faced with regular sandstone blocks. If the basement has three arched openings - with the main entrance on the right, the upper area is also divided into three parts. The middle area is delimited with pilasters and has an over-high, powerful arched window and a triple staggered gable raised above the roof structure. It is flanked in the side areas outside the pilasters, somewhat smaller, also arched windows with a circular window above. In the outside of the pilasters, somewhat smaller, also arched window with a circular window above. Inside, there were expansions entirely geared towards liturgical needs, but hardly anything has survived apart from a side staircase with a cast-iron railing and the original wooden windows with stencil paintings.

The old synagogue has an architectural historical significance as an extension and historical "conversion" of the hall of an inn, especially since contemporary neo-Gothic design elements were used on the only completely redesigned facade as well as design elements typical of the synagogue building of the time. After many years of disdain or expulsion of the Jews, their significance in social history is high.

The new Görlitz synagogue at Otto-Müller-Straße 3 was an expression of a completely different time. It no longer represented the conversion of an old inn room, but a large, self-confident building commissioned by great architects. There were now 649 Jewish residents out of 85,812. The building site for the synagogue, which is planned for 500 places - 280 places at ground level, 220 places on the women's gallery and 40 places for the singers - was bought by the councilor Emanuel Alexander Katz for 70,425 marks from the city of Görlitz. It is located in the midst of villas, including the house of the municipal association of the Görlitz district, or district house for short, built in 1909/10. When the foundation stone was laid on May 21, 1909, dignitaries of the Protestant and Catholic Church and the state authorities took part. Even the regional council in Liegnitz had sent a representative.

In addition to its social and historical significance, the synagogue also has an architectural history that is closely related to its artistic and design significance. The eye-catching and demanding building from 1909 to 1911 is the work of the company of architects William Lossow and Max Hans Kühne, based in Dresden A1 / Waisenhausstrasse 8. They also had the Dresden theater from 1911 to 1913 and the Leipzig train station from 1912 to 1915 built. As with all of these buildings, the Görlitz Synagogue is already characterized by a neo-classical monumental style, which was initially shaped by the architect Peter Behrens from 1908 and which replaced the centuries-old vocabulary of forms with new forms. The building becomes a large sculpture, the ornament enters into a symbiosis with the forms.
