Changes

According to the OECD, income differences widened significantly from the mid-1980s to the middle of the first decade of the 21st century. A significant increase was observed especially from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. Since then, inequality has increased again, albeit only slightly. In both time spans, inequality in Germany increased faster than the OECD average. In France, Finland, Japan, Sweden and the Netherlands, for example, the unequal distribution of income hardly changed between 1995 and 2006. In Spain and Ireland, wages for low-wage earners grew faster than for top workers during the same period.

In Germany, however, the income gap has increased significantly more than in the majority of the OECD countries: the highest paid ten percent of employees earned an average of 3.1 times as much in 2005 as the ten percent with the lowest wages. In 1995 it was only 2.8 times as much. In the 20 OECD countries for which data are available, only in the transition countries Hungary, Poland and South Korea and New Zealand have wages diverged even more.
